Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess - 9/24/83 2nd Guess - 9/19/87
The way things have gone this year, it seems like we are due for another '83 show. After all, it's been a whole six weeks...

How far into 1988 did the last part go?

Last song was "Red Red Wine". And the story he pulled was from its AT40 appearance in 1984.

Found a glitch with part seven at least for me it came out this way, in the last half hour or so, Rock Me Amadeus is cut short and "we'll return with more music in just a moment" comes on, then a stream of commercials, weather, etc. the Jack Wagners All I Need for the extra, then AT40 comes back and they are up to West End Girls. Kiss and Addicted To Love were cut. Sure enough... And that must be why we got the double dose of the Whitney/Madonna segment. D'oh! From 8:30 AM (or so) on, here is a sampling based on my recording: Part 3, Hour 3, Segment 3 Broken Wings Say You, Say Me That's What Friends Are For Part 3, Hour 3 Premiere Extra: (weather break indicates it's 8:56 AM) Easy Lover Part 3, Hour 4, Segment 1 How Will I Know Kyrie Part 3, Hour 4, Segment 2 (weather break indiactes it's 9:12 AM) Sara These Dreams Commercial break song: Sad Songs (Say So Much) Reason To Believe (clipped short) Part 3, Hour 4, Segment 3 (Starts 9:25 AM-ish) Rock Me Amadeus (cut about 3 minutes into it, weather break indicates it is 9:30) Part 3, Hour 4 Premiere Extra: All I Need Part 3, Hour 4, Segment 4 West End Girls Greatest Love of All Live To Tell Part 4, Hour 1, Segment 1 (Started 9:55-ish) Greatest Love of All Live To Tell On My Own Part 4, Hour 1, Segment 2 (weather break indicates it's 10:06 AM) There'll Be Sad SOngs (To Make You Cry) Holding Back the Years commercial break song: Leather and Lace Reason To Believe (clipped short (again!)) Part 4, Hour 1, Segment 3 Invisible Touch Sledgehammer Glory of Love Papa Don't Preach Higher Love So... based on the usual breaks they take during the fourth hour, I would have guessed that the last two segments of that hour would have been: 'Rock Me Amadeus'/'Kiss' (perhaps including some Prince drop-pieces along the way?) and 'Addicted To Love'/'West End Girls' Not sure how the timing would have worked out with an 8-song final hour, but it would have minimized duplication (I have yet to go back and re-listen to the earlier segment in Part 3 that need to be re-edited, or re-listen to my Memorial Day recording to see how it was handled)

One aspect of this to note is that with the 2 song duplication, that would seem to mean the whole series can be extended by 2 songs. Because to replace the duplicated songs in part 4, the first 2 songs of part 5 would be placed at the end of part 4. And the same principle applies to part 5. So the next two #1 songs would be "Groovy Kind of Love" and the aforementioned "Kokomo". That would be great to have that song end part 5 with the record that was set by it IMO.

The duplicated songs took the place of 'Kiss' and 'Addicted to Love', as noted above, so it's a break-even notion. In any event, if the 'Casey's Top 40' rights ever get resolved, the remainder of 1988 and 1989 would likely fill-out four hours to make a whole Part 6 of the 80's series.

Well, TV Land already took The Dukes of Hazzard off the air because of a Confederate Flag on the roof of the General Lee! Taking something off completely is different than editing and airing it. It's still censorship, but in a different way.

Greatest Love of All and Live to Tell will ONLY appear in the first segment of part 4. I'm so disappointed in myself for letting that slip. That final hour of Part 3 of the 80's should have been ... Segment 1: Say You, Say Me - Lionel Richie That's What Friends - Dionne How Will I Know - Whitney Kyrie - Mr. Mister Segment 2: Sara - Starship These Dreams - Heart Segment 3: Rock Me Amadeus - Falco Kiss - Prince Addicted To Love - Robert Palmer Segment 4: All I Need - Jack Wagner (Extra) Segment 5: West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys (yes, just 1 song)

No it's not that series which I have on mp3 files btw. That profiled a whole kaleidoscope of songs, not necessarily #1 songs. There was a special I heard way back when but not since the 80s that was just playing the #1 Hot 100 hits. As I mentioned in the earlier post, I thought they started in 1964 and went to 1979 or whatever year it was that I heard the special. Incidentally, you mentioned the Kings double sided hit in the other thread. I played that song quite a bit when I was in college radio at the time that was a hit in 80-81. Good song. Yes, you're right--I do remember that other show that just played the #1 records in order, and it was not "The History of Rock and Roll". "THORAR" did, however, do a "timeline" segment at the end of the show where they did play snippets of all of the #1 songs of the rock era in order. But I do remember that other show, whatever it was called, starting their show with "Rock Around the Clock". I thought it odd to hear all of the non-rock songs between that groundbreaking tune and Elvis' breakthrough records, and even the large number of #1 records in the following years which were in no way, shape, or form anywhere near 'rock'n'roll'! Maybe some stations decided to begin with 1964 and the British Invasion, and not play the earlier segments, even though they would be missing a lot of classic early pop, rock, and R&B hits. I don't know if this rings a bell, but in 1979 I vividly remember a syndicated special titled "The Number One Radio Show". It began with a montage of charttoppers from "Memories Are Made Of This" from early '56 through "There I've Said It Again" from early '64. Then, starting with "I Want To Hold Your Hand" the show played every number one song through mid '79 (keeping the show current as possible depending on when the show aired). Two stations in northern Indiana carried it initially that spring, which was broadcast in several 3-4 hrs weekly installments over several weeks. At that time my obscession over '60's oldies was beginning, so this show just blew me away. I was fascinated to learn which songs I has grown up with actually topped the charts and which ones were conspicuous by their absence. (For example, I couldn't believe "Up, Up, And Away" was NOT one of the Fifth Dimension's charttoppers.) Later that August, one of those stations played the whole thing over again in one long Saturday block. I remember it coincided with a weekend stay at my grandparents' house. I remember taking my radio and inflicting them with this show I just had to listen to again . But, bless their hearts, they were good sports about it and were happy that I was enjoying myself. (In case there's any doubt, I had the BEST grandparents ever. God rest their souls!)

Confirming that KCCL will run the 1982 show this week. We have started selecting the B show on occasion, but we realized we've never aired this particular A show. So, 1982 it is!

A mess up on Abigail radio, they went from the middle of #40 Let It Be Me by Willie Nelson to starting the segment #37 Toni Cane. I noticed that too. At first I thought it was the stream, but sure enough a skip. So skipped was: #39- You Don't Want Me Anymore- Steel Breeze and #38- Oh Julie- Barry Manilow.. Let's hope there's no more skips or else this is going to end very early.lol
