Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess: 10/3/81 2nd Guess: 10/5/85
Most signs point to one of these two shows. Picking 1981 because it's been longer since that year was last played (albeit only by one week)...

Like the post Cetera line-up or not, didn't Chicago have it's most commercially successful single in 1989 with 'Look Away'? Not that commercial success has anything to do with critical success! I personally liked both incarnations, no matter to me. Will You Still Love Me is a good song IMO. Chicago has been though more lead singers than Van Halen and like VH was better with David Lee Roth, Chicago was better with Cetera, but that's just my opinion. I can't wait until the 86 show, I love hearing songs I haven't heard in years. Two Of Hearts,Friends and Lovers,Press etc... Actually, Chicago doesn't have a "lead singer." They have (and always have had) three singers in the band who all share lead vocals in some combination or another (or separately) depending on the song. Originally there were Robert Lamm (lead on "Beginnings" and co-lead on "Saturday in the Park" among others), Terry Kath (lead on "Make Me Smile" and "Colour My World" among others), and Peter Cetera. After Kath's death, he was eventually replaced by Bill Champlin (lead on "Look Away," co-lead on "Hard Habit to Break" among others). Scheff replaced Cetera as you know and sang lead on "Will You Still Love Me" among others. And while their "hits" period is probably over, Champlin was replaced by Lou Pardini in 2009.

James Pankow and Lee Loughnane also sang lead on a few album tracks. Donnie Dacus also sang lead during his short time in the band in their first try at replacing Kath.

KOOL 94.5FM has the 9/27/86 playlist posted including the optional extras:
Hour #1: "You Give Love A Bad Name" by Bon Jovi Hour #2: "Walk Like An Egyptian" by The Bangles Hour #3: "Amanda" by Boston Hour #4 (this week's curveball): "True Blue" by Madonna... this song debuted on the 10/4/86 Hot 100 at #40. It has been ahile since they featured an optional extra which would debut the following week.
No one guessed all four songs correctly.

Picking 1981 because it's been longer since that year was last played (albeit only by one week)... Yeah, those would probably be my guesses as well, although 1985 would be my first choice, as the 10/12/85 show was played three years ago, while both 10/3/81 and 10/10/81 would be "new" shows. Of course, 1985 was just recently played, so maybe they won't do that year over the next few weeks. I've noticed that they've sort of backed off of 1985, which I think is good - not because it wasn't a good year or anything, but that year is pretty well ahead (gearing up to break the 50 mark) of the other years. They really overdid it in the first half of last year but this year, on the other hand, it is one of the least played years (tying with 1980, 1981 and 1983 - and 1987, if you don't count the special airing of the 7/4/87 special). I mean, I'm sure it will be played at least one more time this year - maybe even twice. But at least they gave it more of a break this year, as well as the second half of last year. By the way, we just started the quadruple 1 page - how about that?

They did this last year with another Madonna song, "Causing a Commotion". It was used as an extra in the 9/5/87 countdown, one week before it entered the Hot 100 at #41 (the AT40 from that week, 9/12/87, was guest hosted and thus not playable to Premiere.)

yes, press was a good song.. To each their own I guess. I thought "Press" was a major jump the shark moment for Sir Paul. He did come back with one more good song ("My Brave Face" in 1989), but his days of hitting the radio were just about over. Same thing for another legendary artist at the time--"A Matter Of Trust" was a definite JTS song for Billy Joel.

Same thing for another legendary artist at the time--"A Matter Of Trust" was a definite JTS song for Billy Joel. Funny, I remember hearing "Matter Of Trust" often on radio in those days but "Press," never. I'll agree with Paul McCartney being a JTS song with "Press" but I liked all of Billy Joel's releases from "The Bridge": Modern Woman, A Matter Of Trust, This Is The Time, even Baby Grand with Ray Charles was a good hit which should have done better. Another JTS moment on this week's AT40 show... The Human League enlisting Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to get a hit. I remember thinking that The Human League sold out their signature sound in order to get a #1 song. I ended up liking "Human" after a number of listens but The Human League didn't quite seem as good of a group as a result of their Jam & Lewis collaboration. ZZ Top has just fallen off AT40 this month in 1986 with "Velcro Fly", and a JTS moment for me was hearing a drum machine on the first release from Afterburner, "Sleeping Bag". I couldn't believe that a group which loved swamp rock boogie could use a drum machine on their album. While I didn't like "Sleeping Bag", I thought "Stages" and "Velcro Fly" worked.

Is it just me or did Twist and Shout sound like crap? On the WWIS broadcast it sure did.
