Even though not all of them classify as rock, here of some of my favorite departed musicians:
Aaliyah Michael Jackson George Harrison Marvin Gaye Andy Gibb Freddie Mercury Maurice Gibb (with the Bee Gees) Teena Marie Bob Marley Heavy D. Notorious B.I.G. Kurt Cobain Andrea True
Aaliyah's death was very sad, but nothing compared to that of MJ's, IMO.

I am sorry, that is the way European Radio refers to him, I did not know it was rude.

Vesta Williams (unfortunately didn't get to that status - I'll watch Unsung for more details. Nonetheless I've always loved her and her records. She is the first solo female artist that I've ever purchased an album/cassette from)
Marvin Gaye
Robert Palmer
Levi Stubbs (Four Tops lead singer)
Ali Woodson (The Temptations lead singer 1984 - 1988?)
Nate Dogg
Eugene Record (Chi-Lites lead singer)
