Whatever happened to...? (March 28, 1981) (Part Two) - KRNY Kearney, NE - 1460/98.9 - An AM/FM combo; the AM is now KXPN, an ESPN Sports station, and the FM is now KKPR, an Oldies station.
- KSTK Wrangell, AK - 101.7 - Guess what? It's yet another Alaska station that's now an NPR station! I swear, more Alaska then-affiliates than not are now-NPRs these days...
- WFJA Sanford, NC - 105.5 - Now a Classic Hits/Oldies station. Of note is that they picked up the show in October 1976.
- WZOK Rockford, IL - 97.5 - Seeing as they're a Hot AC-leaning Top 40 station today (that plays the Weekly Top 40 rather than AT40), I sought clarification on their 1981 format - interestingly, their format was given as "contemporary rock". Perhaps that was just another way of saying AOR, but nonetheless, their current format doesn't seem to have moved far from what it used to be.
- WXAL Demopolis, AL - 1400 - Remaining a Top 40 for most of the 80s, they now play Urban contemporary and Urban Oldies. Given those together, I'd be inclined to call that Urban AC.
- WPGC AM/FM Washington, D.C. - 1580/95.5 - On November 10, 2008, the AM took on their current Talk format. This past December 1, they changed letters to WNEW, though those are said to only be a placeholder (they were WHFS prior to this). The FM is still WPGC, only they're now an Urban/Rhythmic station - Nielsen reports them as Urban, while Mediabase reports them as CHR/Rhythmic.

OZ-FM from St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada was one of the "Great Radio Stations" of AT40 back in the day. OZ-FM dropped AT40 in the summer of 2009 (shortly after Casey Kasem retired from broadcasting and AT20 ended its run) to make way for a modern and classic rock radio format. 99.1 HITS-FM became the new "great radio station" of AT40 (though such term may not have been mentioned by Ryan Seacrest) in the fall of 2009, and airs on weekends to this day, along with Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40.
And by the way, as of January 2012, OZ-FM reverted back to modern pop and some rock music, but still doesn't air AT40. OZ-FM is looking to compete against 99.1 HITS-FM for some reason. What will be next? OZ-FM becoming a country music station?

Stations mentioned on the 4/7/1984 show (first three hours only; see below): - WHNY, McComb, MS - This is a strange one. This station appears to still exist on the AM dial in McComb (format unknown), but it's also the call letters for an urban contemporary station on the FM dial in New York.
More info on this would be appreciated. See my post below on the fate of this station.
- KDXT, Missoula, Montana - mentioned on the 2/6/1988 show
- WNMB, North Myrtle Beach, SC - now WEZV and an easy listening station
- KWIC, Brownwood, TX - now a regional Mexican station under the call letters KQQK; the KWIC call letters now belong to a classic hits station in Topeka, KS
- WGCL, Cleveland, OH - mentioned on the 11/28/1981 show; this was the station that aired their own Top 40 countdown on 7/7/1979 (two days after I was born) rather than the Top 40 Disco Songs countdown.
- WJDX, Jackson, MS - currently an oldies station (Wiki entry here); they air AT40: The 70s every Sunday morning at 10 AM ET
- KRSB, Roseburg, OR - currently a country station

WWIS is airing regular programming now so someone that listens tomorrow morning will have to get the stations in the last hour.

I just gave Google another shot and found this from January 2011: So this station can be added to the list of "great radio stations" that are no longer in existence. Stations mentioned on the 4/8/1978 show: - KHNY, Riverside, CA - the station now has an AC format with the call letters KLSN and trimulcasts with two other stations under the name "Playlist 92.7". From Wikipedia:
- WAPE, Jacksonville, FL - this station now has the call letters WOKV and is a news/talk station. The WAPE call letters now belong to a Top 40 station also in Jacksonville.
(The old WAPE was Top 40 until the early 80s when they switched to country. They then switched to a religious format for a short time before they moved to the FM dial at 95.1 in 1986 and went back to the Top 40 format they had before the switch to country.)
- WGLF, Tallahassee, FL - currently a classic hits station
- WUFF, Eastman, GA - currently has a country format (except on Sundays when they air religious programming and gospel music). They changed frequencies from 92.1 to 97.5 in 1992.
- KMVI, Wailuku, Hawaii - currently has a sports format as part of ESPN Radio
- WIBV, Belleville, IL - currently a Radio Disney affiliate with the call letters WSDZ (since 12/4/1998)
- KWHK, Hutchinson, KS - currently an oldies station
- WVIC, Lansing, MI - This station was first mentioned in this thread on the second page, starting here; they apparently had an interesting history when it comes to airing AT40.
Five new stations were welcomed in the third hour: (NOTE: I was saving something on Audacity so I couldn't record Casey mentioning the stations like I usually do; I was only quick enough to type out the call letters but not the locations.) - WWQM, Middleton, Wisconsin - has been a country station since 1981. From the Wikipedia entry:
- WZZB -
- KEDD -
- KDOK -
- KFKA, Fort Collins, CO - now a news/talk station

Speaking of WVIC, an update to my post that Lousy Smarch Weather posted a link to. WFMK must've dropped it and then re-added the show, because it was mentioned before in a 1984 show that aired earlier this year. I guess then-CHR WVIC aired it in-between? Just recently recieved a copy of both of Pete's AT40 books (70's and 80's), and my guess that it moved back to WVIC was, in fact, wrong. Apparently it moved in 1986 to WJXQ (a.k.a. Q106), which was a Rock-leaning CHR that, at the time, attempted a more Pop-oriented approach to compete better with WVIC. It failed miserably, and by 1987 they reverted back to a Rock format (this time AOR), which soon became hugely successful. Their format has since been modified to Active Rock. Just thought I'd throw that out there in case it's mentioned in any future 80's shows, which, according to the book, it won't be until at least next year, as it was only mentioned twice (3/29/86 and 4/11/87).

Here are the two stations mentioned in the last hour of the 4/7/1984 show: - WMEE, Fort Wayne, IN - currently an Hot AC station (their format since 1994)
- KOZE, Lewiston, ID - currently an AOR station

- WZZB -
Centreville, Mississippi. They're now WKJN, a Gospel station. Wiki says they signed on in 1979, but I don't believe them. - KEDD -
Dodge City, Kansas. Now KDCC and owned by Dodge City Community College, it's their station. - KDOK -
Tyler, Texas. Seeing as there's three stations that have had those call letters at one time or another in Tyler, my guess is this is the station at 1490 AM (per the 1981 listening guide), which is now KYZS, an ESPN Sports station.

Regarding WAPE, it was on 690 AM and that is now news/talk which is also is simulcasted on 106.5 FM there. WAPE for all intents and purposes on 95.1 is the same station it was on 690. It moved to that frequency from 690 in 85/86. Might have been a couple of format changes way back when but it's the primary CHR station in the area and probably always will be (CC is figuring that out now I think). The infamous ape yell is still heard at the top of the hour. The ape yell comes from a song from some guy Nervous Norbert or something like that. It's all escaping me at the moment.

"Ape Call" by Nervous Norvus (incidentally, Casey played a clip of that song during the chart run of George Michael's "Monkey", although we didn't get to hear the ape yell at the end of the record that became WAPE's trademark sound).

Stations mentioned on the 4/18/1987 show: - Hot Hits FM 98 (WCAU-FM), Philadelphia, PA - mentioned on the 12/13/1986 and 11/21/1987 shows
- WBBQ-FM (104.3), Augusta, GA - currently an AC station (since 1994 when they switched formats with WZNY, now with the call letters WIBL and a country format)
- KTQN (All-Hits Q106), Killeen/Temple, TX - mentioned a month ago on the 3/22/1986 show
- WABB (FM 97), Mobile, AL - mentioned on the 1/23/1988 show (and during the Shadoe years on 5/12/1990); they became a K-LOVE affiliate a month ago and changed their call letters to WLVM
- KJYO (Power Hits KJ103), Oklahoma City, OK - still a Top 40 station (though they briefly had the "rhythmic Top 40" format from 1989-1991) that most likely still airs AT40 since they have Ryan Seacrest on every afternoon
- KHIT, Seattle, WA - mentioned on the 11/21/1987 show. According to this post, they're now a news/talk with the call letters KGCD
- WOVV (Hit Radio 95.5), Fort Pierce, FL - mentioned on the 12/26/1987 show
- WGCD (Your Station 1490), Chester, SC - currently a gospel station
- KXOR (The Bayou Superstation), Thibodaux, LA - the only KXOR in Louisiana I could find on Wikipedia is this one, but there's no mention of them ever being a Top 40 station. I'm going to look into this more.
- Power Hits Quad 106, Sacramento, CA - mentioned on the 12/26/1987 show and twice in the Shadoe years (12/23/1989 and 5/12/1990)
- KEZY (96 FM), Anaheim, CA - now KFSH and a contemporary Christian station
- WNOK (Hot Hits 104.7), Columbia, SC - mentioned on the 2/6/1988 show
- KINN-FM (105.5), Alamogordo, NM - mentioned on the 12/26/1987 show
One new station welcomed to the AT40 family: - KSDO (Music Power KS103), San Diego, CA - now KLQV and a Spanish oldies format. They must not have had the show for long because they switched to a snooth jazz format the same year (date unknown).

- All-Hits Q106, Killeen/Temple, TX -
Not surprising you're not having much luck with this one...you didn't last month, either (for 3/22/86). It's KTQN (now KOOC) again. As for KXOR...could they have been an AOR station carrying the show in '87, perhaps? Given their Wiki, it would make sense, though I haven't looked them up in the history archives yet to know for sure.
