Listening to last week's show from 11/5/83, I noticed something that struck me as atypical. That week's top 40 included 13 songs that did not crack the top 20, 9 of which peaked in the 23-30 range. Does that seem unusually high?

I thought the first hour was a big dud of non-hits. I was going to start a thread about whether it was the worst first hour ever. It seemed unusually high to me.

Just a list of the first hours' songs:
#40-"Spice Of Life"-Manhattan Transfer #39-"Just Got Lucky"-Jo Boxers #38-"She's Sexy & 17"-Stray Cats #37-"Why Me"-Irene Cara #36-"Mirror Man"-Human League #35-"Queen Of The Broken Hearts"-Loverboy #34-"Automatic Man"-Michael Sembello #33-"Dr.Heckyll & Mr.Jive"-Men At Work #32-"How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye"-Dionne Warwick & Luther Vandross #31-"Tender Is The Night"-Jackson Browne
Besides Jackson Browne and the Stray Cats, the rest were duds. Not that I don't like any of them personally, but they never became popular.

The Irene Cara song got to #13, higher than any of those listed other than the Stray Cats' hit. In any event, this was one of my favorite recently played countdowns; I even liked most of the songs that weren't big hits.

Same here MKarns, 11/5/83 was a FANTASTIC countdown. I totally disagree that the songs were duds.

If you want to talk about a show with a bunch of low peaking songs, talk about the 3/24/73 show aired on SXM this year. 8 of the 10 songs in the 30s also peaked in the 30s!

I disagree also about the Men At Work song as well as Jackson Browne. Just because radio doesnt have any variety, doesn't mean they weren't duds that people wouldn't like to hear again!

I thought the first hour was a big dud of non-hits. I was going to start a thread about whether it was the worst first hour ever. It seemed unusually high to me. You're crazy! That '83 show was just a killer show - the fact that so many of those 1st hour songs were so good is a big reason why. The Dionne Warwick song was the only dud of the bunch. Just because those others weren't bigger hits doesn't mean they weren't great songs...

Wahoo is so right! I was rocking out to XM First Wave a few years ago and re-connnected to "Mirror Man" ..what a jam. Love Dr. Heckyl and Browne. This was a great show, with usual amount of lame songs - only a few. "Queen of the Broken Hearts" is a sweet song as well.

I think you are reading me wrong. They were duds when it came to chart position. Remember I said:
>>>Not that I don't like any of them personally, but they never became popular. <<<
I really liked the JoBoxers, Human League and Men at Work songs. I cringed at Manhattan Transfer and Michael Sembello. And the Dionne Warwick and Luther Vandross song really isn't my thing.
But as far as chart, 7 of the bottom 10 didn't get very far.

I see PaxMan - I think there was a lot of songs holding their ground above the first dozen. JoBoxers, Human League and Dr. Heckyl were good. "Tender is the Night" is a great song - loved watching the video on "Friday Night Videos".

Ah, FNV. Even though MTV played videos 24/7 back then, it was fun to watch that show. How late was that on, 1am on the East Coast?

Personally the majority of songs I really loved in the 80s were low peaking songs. (#20 and higher).

Sorry paxman to get emotional about things...just thought it was a great show. I get what you meant about duds. I actually have to admit I really like the Manhattan Transfer and M. Sembello tunes...
