4 hours for me! The more, the better. I look forward to Sunday nights with AT40 the 80s on WQSR all week long, and its always over too fast! The more the better for me. I enjoy the shows so much, its always a pleasure to tune in. Now, I have never listened to a full 8 hour Top 100 all in one stretch... that may be a little much for me.

I have listened to to Top 100 broadcasts all in one sitting, and I have never minded it at all. I love it.

We probably wouldn't be having this discussion if Casey had originally done "American Top Thirty (AT30)" ....the 30 hottest songs in America according to Billboard magazine counted down for three hours each week. Hmmm this would have been an interesting "What if...." Certainly no songs would have been edited.

I like the four hour versions. They got more meat to them. One thing I dont like is.When the stations lop off the first hour. Why bother running the show.PreRad should make them play the show in its completeness.

During Shadoe's era in 1992, on one episode, Shadoe did promise to play the full album version of November Rain by Guns N' Roses, which was nearly 10 minutes long! They must have had to do some editing of songs in that hour to accommodate that full album version. I remember Shadoe making that promise, but if memory serves me he (or rather the show's producers) never actually went through with it...

I agree with Pete. I prefer the 3 hour version. I liked Casey's blurb ("Three hours every week with American Top 40, and you know where your favorite songs are on the national music scene"). When they went to 4 hours they added too many extras, like playing last week's top 3 songs. I liked it better when they went straight into the 40. And now I will reveal myself as a heretic: I never cared much for Long Distance Dedications, either.

This may be somewhat off-topic, but I wonder what drove the decision to go from a 6-segments-per-hour format to 4 segments (basically, the same segment format that Dees had already)?

The 3 hour shows had too many edits, but when the show went to 4 hours, it lasted longer than necessary since they filled in the extra time with last week's the top 3, archive of #1 songs & LDD. What annoyed me the most while listening was the number of commercials that came on - after every other song or sometimes as few as after only 1 song. The current premiere rebroadcast makes it more bearable since it only has about half as many commercial breaks. The year end countdowns were great because they had no extras.

Add me to the 4-hour club; I grew up listening to Casey here in LA since he arrived here in 1963, and had no idea that this board even existed until last year.
KOLA has aired his 70s countdown on Sunday mornings for several years, and I'm really glad that they now air it again on Sunday evenings.

Marv, I agree, I love the four hours except for the top 3 recap. But I do love all the extras for the neat stories. Especially the pre-AT40 songs stories.
I do love the early shows for the music and 3 hours was enough, but the change should have started 1977 at least. Maybe 1976.
