Surprising that we're having a 1971 show so soon. But it's always a treat to hear the early Casey Kasem shows anyhow, and 1971 had a lot of great music.
Just don't understand what the hangup is with the 1972-1973 time span ... must have something against the class of 1973 or something, as we've only heard that one program (Dec. 16, 1972) since the May 20, 1972 program aired from that 10-months-and-counting time span.
Extras predictions:
• "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo," the fast-breaking hit by the new artist named Lobo. The last time we heard a Lobo song on AT40, it was on the last show from the 1972-1973 time frame: "I'd Love You to Want Me." • "Woodstock" by Ian Matthews, who was recording as Matthews' Southern Comfort. Eight years later, Matthews hit it big with his second hit ... "Shake It." • and a song that dropped from the countdown after a big top 10 run ... "If You Could Read My Mind" by Gordon Lightfoot. Either that, or we'll hear "Just a Dream" from Jimmy Clanton, a doo-wop song. Much different, I'm sure, than Carrie Underwood's far different song named "Just a Dream" (hers being about a beautiful widow whose new husband was killed in action) ... and, I'm sure, many other songs named "Just a Dream."
My prediction for next week (not this weekend) is a repeat of the April 14, 1973 show. Premiere must hate "You're So Vain," "Crocodile Rock" and "Superstition," which we would have heard had we heard a 1973 show from January-March (and yes, I do realize we heard two of those songs on the Dec. 16, 1972 show, and the third was an extra). This is, quite frankly, getting quite appalling (beyond just annoying or perplexing).

Interesting piece of trivia about "Smoke Smoke Smoke (That Cigarette)"-It was released seventeen years before the Surgeon General determined that cigarette smoking is hazardous to one's health-By the way,the warnings started to appear on cigarette packages in 1964.

WHNN has opted for 04/03/1982 this weekend, so we'll have to wait till sometime Monday to see the Premiere cue sheet for the 70s show at Y102.9 (see at40caseyfan's earlier post)
Interesting find on the 80s cue sheet... the words "...thanks for listening" at the end. Maybe someone other than "Dr. Larry" doing the announcing?

Nope. I've heard Larry close with "Thanks for listening" on the '80s shows for a while now. Guessing he doesn't do the same on the '70s shows.

I just hope we get a larger rotation of eligible years for AT40 the 70s--playing the same year (1971) that we just heard three weeks ago isn't even rotation, when we haven't heard 1973 at all.

I usually don't get in on these predictions but I'm really hoping to hear 4/9/77 next week. It's the show I remember hearing while vacationing in Vero Beach, Florida. Several weeks before, Casey gave a station plug for WOVB; so when I arrived in Vero Beach I called them and asked when AT40 was on. When I was there the year before, I caught just the last hour of AT40 on a weak signal from a station in Miami. How's that for a memory!

That is a good memory! The Fort Pierce station was 95.5 WOVV. They are now WLDI (Wild 95-5). I used to visit my grandparents in Ft. Lauderdale every year before moving there in 1982. I cannot for the life of me remember a station from Miami that broadcast AT40 before Y-100 picked it up in 1981. I think I used to listen to it on WRMF from West Palm Beach.

Following up CRZ108, here's a list of songs on AT40-the 70s that we'll never hear from Premiere in their peak position, due to guest hosts, special countdowns, etc. I arranged them chronologically rather than by chart position. Nothing that peaked after September 1978 is listed due to Premiere's not playing the four hour 70s shows.
1/2/71: "For the Good Times"-Ray Price (#11) "Domino"-Van Morrison (#9)
1/9/71: "One Man Band"-Three Dog Night (19)
11/6/71: "Charity Ball"-Fanny (40; this was its only week in the countdown, so we'll never hear it in its entirety. I recall an 80s show played last year had a drop-piece of it, though.) "Tired of Being Alone"-Al Green (11)
12/25/71: "(I Know) I'm Losing You)"- Rod Stewart/Faces (24) "Respect Yourself"-Staple Singers (12) "Where Did Our Love Go"-Donnie Elbert (15) "Can I Get a Witness"-Lee Michaels (39; never actually heard on AT40 at all, as this was its only week in the top 40 and the "All Time Christmas Countdown" special was run instead)
1/1/72: "An American Trilogy"-Mickey Newbury (26)
3/25/72: "No One to Depend On"-Santana (36) "We've Got to Get It On Again"-Addrisi Brothers (25) "Runnin' Away"-Sly & the Family Stone (23) "The Way of Love"- Cher (7)
8/5/72: "Layla"-Derek & the Dominoes (10)
12/16/72: "Angel"-Rod Stewart (40) (Casey played the B-side, "Los Paraguayos"; this was its only week in the top 40 so "Angel" was never heard on the show at all.)
12/23/72: "You Ought to Be With Me"-Al Green (3)
12/30/72: "Sweet Surrender"-Bread (15)
4/7/73: "Break Up To Make Up"-Stylistics (5) "Space Oddity"-David Bowie (15)
6/16/73: "Pillow Talk"-Sylvia (3)
7/7/73: "Time to Get Down"-O'Jays (33) "Daddy Could Swear, I Declare"- Gladys Knight & the Pips (19)
10/6/73: "You've Never Been This Far Before"-Conway Twitty (22) "Loves Me Like a Rock"-Paul Simon (2)
12/22/73: "Hello It's Me"-Todd Rundgren (5) "My Music"-Loggins & Messina (16) "Rockin' Roll Baby"-Stylistics (14) "I Can't Stand the Rain"-Ann Peebles (38)* "Some Guys Have All the Luck"-Persuaders (39) "Tell Her She's Lovely"-El Chicano (40)* (*These two were never heard on AT40 even in 1973, as they only were in the top 40 for that one week, when the second Christmas countdown was aired.)
12/29/73: "D'yer Mak'er"-Led Zeppelin (20) "Mind Games"-John Lennon (18)
4/6/74: "Hooked on a Feeling"-Blue Swede (1)
6/29/74 (This was the chart that the AT40 staff "guessed"; the songs listed we won't hear in their correct Billboard peak positions): "Be Thankful For What You Got"-William Devaughn (4) "If You Love Me Let Me Know"-Olivia Newton-John (5) "I'm Coming Home"-Spinners (18) "Train of Thought"-Cher (27) "Already Gone"-Eagles (32) And an honorable mention to ZZ Top's "La Grange", which was played on the guessed chart at #33 but in actuality missed Billboard's top 40, peaking at 41.
7/6/74: "Hollywood Swinging"-Kool & the Gang (6) "Rock the Boat"-Hues Corporation (1)
7/13/74: "Workin' at the Car Wash Blues"-Jim Croce (32) "One Hell of a Woman"-Mac Davis (11; interestingly, it ranked one spot higher on the 1974 year end chart)
10/5/74: "Hang On In There Baby"-Johnny Bristol (8) "Clap For the Wolfman"-Guess Who (6)
12/21/74: "Cat's In the Cradle"-Harry Chapin (1) "Sha La La (Make Me Happy"-Al Green (7)

4/5/75: "Butter Boy"-Fanny (29) "Lovin' You"-Minnie Riperton (1)
7/5/75: "Hey You"-Bachman-Turner Overdrive (21)
10/4/75: "Gone At Last"-Paul Simon/Phoebe Snow (23) "Run Joey Run"-David Geddes (4) "How Long (Betcha Got a Chick On the Side)"-Pointer Sisters (20)
10/11/75: "Mr. Jaws"-Dickie Goodman (4) "Rocky"-Austin Roberts (9)
12/27/75: "Let's Do It Again"-Staple Singers (1) "Fire On the Mountain"-Marshall Tucker Band (38) "Schoolboy Crush"-Average White Band (33) "Full of Fire"-Al Green (28) "Part Time Love"-Gladys Knight & the Pips (22)
1/3/76: "Saturday Night"-Bay City Rollers (1) "For the Love of You"-Isley Brothers (24)
2/7/76: "Times of Your Life"-Paul Anka (7)
8/7/76: "I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do the Walking"-Supremes (40; only week on so we'll never hear it) "Another Rainy Day in New York City"-Chicago (32) "Sophisticated Lady"-Natalie Cole (25) "If You Know What I Mean"-Neil Diamond (11)
10/2/76: "Sunrise"-Eric Carmen (34) "One Love In My Lifetime"-Diana Ross (25) "Wham Bam (Shang-a-Lang)"-Silver (16)

Well, we're into April now, and still no 1973. The odds have got to be good for a 1973 show this week.
Guess what I think we'll get? My prediction — the show they've played at least twice: April 14, 1973. Sigh. Probably will even be the original 2007 version with Ed McMann announcing, and the same extras from that re-airing.
If not, the April 10, 1976, countdown sounds good. Please, not April 9, 1977, again (which we've also heard at least twice).
I completely agree with the poster who said that the current "rotation" Premiere is using isn't. Don't get me wrong: 1971 was a great year for pop music, but the idea — I thought — of AT40: The 70s — was to give a different slice of the 1970s each week (yes, late 1978-1979 included; all Premiere needs to do is make the first hour "optional"), and spread it out enough over a span of several weeks so that we get variety.
Brian
P.S. — Perhaps if Premiere plays a June 1978 show this summer, "Chattanooga Choo Choo" by Tuxedo Junction should be played as an extra, to be fair to these guys.
Brian
