Now THAT would be a treat to hear the first week of August! Not that I'm holding my breath... Obviously there was nothing "Basketball Jones"-like that was playable from "Big Bambu". As I recall that entire LP was pretty raunchy and druggy. The other three omissions were probably due to time constraints, although skipping Billy Prestons's LP is strange. Though it is worth noting that the nonmusical "Big Bambu" track "Sister Mary Elephant" was heard on AT40 several times in January 1974, after being belatedly released as a single and charting.

Wow--I assumed that "Elephant" was from the same '73 Cheech and Chong LP that had "Basketball Jones" on it. Can't remember the title and too lazy to look it up in Whitburn... Thanks for the info.

Actually there was a top 40 hit on that Lp....."Sister Mary Elephant". Little did AT40 know at the time that a comedy act would garner a top 40 hit let alone that one. No comedy of any kind had been on AT40 in the 2 years they had been counting them down to that point in time. Elephant is not the only controversial song that would reach the top 40 that AT40 bypassed. They played "Johnny B. Goode" from Chuck Berry's THE LONDON SESSIONS bypassing a song that debuted that very week....."My Ding-a-Ling". That one did a lot more than 'reach the top 40'!

Interesting that "My Ding A Ling" went to # 1-It was banned on many of the major top forty stations throughout the country including WABC in New York which only played it once.

Does anyone know why they stopped playing a song from the #1 LP at some point in 1971? It was my favorite feature in the early days of the show. I'm sure the main reason was because of time issues. Average song length was getting longer so the extras were getting fewer and fewer. I too enjoyed that part of the early 1970s shows. It extended into at least 1972, as evidenced by the Stones song referenced above. It started as an occasional brief Top 5 rundown with a track from the #1 LP, I believe. Most track selections were what Album Rock FM stations were playing, rather than belonging to a hit based countdown show. Maybe that’s why they axed the feature.

Prediction for next week's show: 1st Guess: 6/28/75 2nd Guess: 6/30/79 It would appear that '75 is the front runner for next week. I don't really think there's much chance of getting 1979 until July or August, but you never know. You can feasibly rule out just about any other year unless they decide to give us a quick turnaround on one of the recent early 70's years they've aired. BTW, the following weekend is the 4th of July and will mark the 45th anniversary of AT40's inaugural show...hmmm, wonder what Premiere will play that weekend?

I do know that the iHeartRadio AT40 station will be playing all the year-enders, from 1970 through 1987.

I figured this would happen after seeing the first two guesses... Two out of three is the best showing once again. Picking Andy Kim was the wrong way to go, I'm afraid... This week's extras are: "Feel Like Makin' Love" - Roberta Flack "Tell Me Something Good" - Rufus "Call On Me" - Chicago

Yeah it's hard to believe that Cheech & Chong had 3 Top 40 hits & I was looking up on www.top40usa.net that they almost had 5 as in 1976 "Famed" which I remember from the cassette I have & in 1977 "Bloat On" (featuring The Bloaters) {I'm guessing it's a parody of the Floaters "Float On") I can't say as I remember it I might have to check the cassettes I have both hit #41. I can see station playing "Basketball Jones" & "Earache My Eye" as they had singing in them but "Sister Mary Elephant" would've sounded odd on any station. I've always liked novelty or comedy songs but I didn't realize how big of hits they were. Listening to the 70's shows I have discovered some new songs I didn't know of such as the 2 hits by the Jimmy Castor Bunch & the 2 "Mr. Jaws" like songs "Convention 72" & "Superfly Meets Shaft". BTW I like "My Ding-A-Ling" but it's still hard to believe that it's Chuck Berry's only #1 song.

What's up with the stream from KOKZ? Has it changed from last week?

Looks like KOKZ may have changed their player. It doesn't look like the previous Liquid Compass player - but I was able to get the stream by going to the official KOKZ site and clicking on, listen live.

Looks like the stream is via Streamtheworld. player.listenlive.co/43691 is the direct link to the page with the live audio. Two notable points so far in today's show -- the debut for Waterloo (being an ABBA fan) and having station IDs from the stations rather than Casey calling out "great stations like..."

Great - my Replay AV8 recording software can't pick it up, just like it can't record any stations streaming on iHeart. Now I've got to find another good stream! UGH!!

WMGN, Madison, WI broadcasts AT40 the 70's at 10PM ET On Saturday. They still use Liquid Compass. They just don't typically include any of the Premiere extras.
