What a blast hearing an early '79 show this week - it was right when I started devoutly following the 40. My 14 yr old self would sit there every Saturday with my spiral notebook (complete with Steve Miller's Book of Dreams cover art!) and a red Bic stic duly noting each title & position. Interesting that Casey said "Le Freak" was in it's 5th week at the top, when it was actually the 6th. I'm assuming that the discrepancy is due to the frozen chart at the end of '78. ivanzero... welcome to the board! I started listening devoutly to AT40 just a few months before you... late 1978, my 6th grade year. I also had a notebook where I would record the Top 40... #1 - #25 on the front side, and #26 - #40 on the back side along with the droppers. I wish I had kept those notebooks! I used to keep notebooks back in the early 80s (I have since thrown them away) and I thought I was "different" for doing that. I guess I really wasn't. Heck, I thought I was different for listening to the show as kids didn't talk about it at school at all.

^That would change very soon about the way they handled frozen weeks. By the time they did the disco special 5 months later, they were referring to "Le Freak" spending 6 weeks at #1. Same thing happened with "Tonight's the Night" which had been referred to as having spent 7 weeks on top but then they said 8 weeks. Paul Simon's song was on XM this week not a Premiere show. During the 1/31/81 show, Casey referred to Neil Diamond's "Love On the Rocks" as having four weeks at #2 when it spent only 3 weeks there. Either that was a mistake or Billboard put together a chart for the "frozen" week (1/3/81) that Casey or the AT40 staff saw but was never released to the public.

OMG! I just tuned in to my beloved WODC and hearing Barbra Streisand's "The Way We Were." Heart was beating thinking the 2/2/74 countdown was on by mistake! Streisand was #1 with that song on the 1974...and a LDD tonight on the 1979! Oh, Barbra!

Well this is interesting... KOLA is confirming 2/5/77 for next week's show. Link: www.kolafm.com/casey-kasem/KOLA played the "B" show this past week so maybe we know what the "B" show is this week? Remember that Milwaukee Oldies website says next weekend's show is from 1972. Well...the plot thickens. Apparently, the "B" show is not from 77, but is instead 2/14/1976. Wonder if KOLA is either going rogue next weekend, or if they are in fact airing 72, and the 77 posting is a typo. That is to say, that the "A" show, is in fact 2/5/1972. 72 last aired in 2011, 76 in 2013...count on extras being the same unless Premiere decides to throw a curve on us.

And...there is a curve. Turns out for 72, one extra will return from the 2011 airing, while the other two are replaced. Due to the nature of the replacements, I'll give a hint. One of them falls off the 40 this week, the other is headed toward the 40 (it may or may not be a Hot 100 debut). Get your guesses for these in now.

I'll guess these for February 5, 1972:
"Got to Be There"-Michael Jackson (fell off the top 40) "Heart of Gold"-Neil Young (used in 2011) "Mother and Child Reunion"-Paul Simon (debuted on Hot 100)
Two years ago, the February 14, 1976 extras were as follows:
"Right Back Where We Started From"-Maxine Nightingale "Cupid"-Sam Cooke* "Let Your Love Flow"-Bellamy Brothers
*"Cupid" was an extra in the original 1976 broadcast. Interestingly, the very next week Tony Orlando & Dawn debuted on AT40 with a remake of the same song.

Without knowing what the extra that was used in 2011 was, here's my picks:
* "Mother and Child Reunion" -- Paul Simon. * "Once You Understand" -- Think f. Lou Stallman. (The dropper, and representing the last week in which each AT40 beforehand had a socially relevant song.)
... and a pick between two songs that debuted later in February 1972 and would make their mark on the top 40:
* "Roundabout" -- Yes. * "A Horse With No Name" -- America.

Without knowing what the extra that was used in 2011 was, Those were: "Heart of Gold" by Neil Young, "The Way of Love"by Cher, and "Runnin' Away" by Sly & The Family Stone. So, the repeat is one of those.

Bummer--WODC only played one extra on the 2/2/74 show, and that was "Sunshine On My Shoulders". And that extra was overlapped at the beginning by a late return from the commercial break. Not to mention that song may be one of my all time least favorite top 40 hits...I would rather be waterboarded then listen to it.

I don't hate the song, in part because I can't stay awake long enough to do so. I'd rather have heard the much-maligned "Seasons In the Sun", which at least has a little more vigor. And I'd really have liked to hear "Come and Get Your Love". They at least did play all four optional extras in the 1979 show.
