4/28/73 was last played April 17-18, 2010 (a week ahead of schedule, in a sense). The optional extras then were: Hour #1: "Long Train Runnin'"-Doobie Brothers Hour #2: "The First Cut Is the Deepest"-Keith Hampshire Hour #3: "Playground in My Mind"-Clint Holmes Here's hoping the Hampshire stays. One of my fave versions of that oft-covered song. Love his big David Clayton Thomas-ish voice. Shame he never had a US Top 40 hit.

^Barry White's first Top 40 hit, which is one week away from the countdown is a possibility. Premiere is less likely to replace a 70s' song than an 80s' song when the song does not reach the Top 40. "The First Cut Is the Deepest" was also used as an optional extra on the 5/26/73 show.

But I agree that Keith Hampshire should stay; his rendition of the Cat Stevens composition made the Hot 100 though not the top 40, and reached #1 in Keith's native Canada. And the song has since become very well known in the US courtesy of several other successful versions, most notably by Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow.

Hard to believe that Billy Joel's "Piano Man" peaked at #25 on this show and was only in Top 40 for 4 weeks. I think it's one of the iconic songs of the 70's and arguably one of Billy's best songs. Bruce Springsteen got the same treatment with his first Top 40 hit in 1975 "Born to Run", another classic. To boot, Springsteen also made the covers of mainstream news magazine, including Time. And during a time he’d peak only in the mid-20s for a song that has since become a classic. Brian

I can only speak from personal experience, but "Piano Man" got little airplay on the airwaves where I lived - so I'm not all that surprised that it didn't go too high on the charts. I see from your profile that you are from Cape Cod. That surprises me a little bit, you would think the N.E. area would have gotten more airplay on "Piano Man" (and "Born to Run") I was in MD at that time and they both got ample airplay.
So I am wondering about other sections of the Country - the S.E., Midwest, West Coast. Did "Piano Man" and "Born to Run" get much airplay?

I seem to remember both songs from my very early childhood. Both songs at least received recurrent airplay on WLS in Chicago, but I do seem to remember the Springsteen song in late 1975. Not sure about the remainder of the midwest, though.

As a ten-year-old boy growing up in northern Indiana in the spring of '74, I remember at the time hearing a lot of the songs from this past weekend's 1974 countdown, but "Piano Man" wasn't one of them; it would be several years before I would be familiar with Billy Joel's recording of it. However, around 1974-75, I saw it performed several times on the old "Merv Griffin" talk show----by Merv Griffin himself (singing in front of a piano while playing). I had never heard that song before, and I tell you, seeing and hearing Merv perform it was NOT a pleasant introduction to it. His performance was horrible and creepy.

Merv wasn't a great singer-He was best known for creating two iconic game shows "Jeopardy" & "Wheel Of Fortune"-Those programs made him filthy rich!

In Sioux Falls, SD, "Piano Man" peaked at #5 and "Born to Run" peaked at #12. If you are interested in doing a search for old music surveys from your youth, do a search on " ARSA Radio Surveys". There are tons of surveys from different radio stations listed there, especially the bigger stations. But even smaller stations have good coverage - there are over 380 surveys for Sioux Falls. WLS has over 1200 surveys listed. You can select surveys by state, city, or station call letters.

Billy Joel addressed the edited version of "Piano Man" in his hit from late 1974 "The Entertainer"-Great song that never receives recurrent airplay.

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess - 5/3/75 2nd Guess - 5/6/72
As of next week, it will be three months since the last 1975 'A' show, and this is one that hasn't been played since 2010.

5/3/75 sounds like a distinct possibility-There were some great songs on that particular countdown including "Only Women Bleed","Young Americans",& "Sister Goldenhair"-Hope this is the featured show next week.
