Thankfully enough potential rising songs that I can avoid predicting as an extra IMO the worst song of the 70's, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers". Unfortunately, that appears to have cost you. You and a few others guessed two correctly, but only mrjukebox and kchkwong guessed three. Add to this that one extra went completely unguessed, and, well... This week's extras are: "Promises" - Eric Clapton "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" - Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond "Hold The Line" - Toto "Le Freak" - Chic

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess - 11/9/74 2nd Guess - 11/10/73
As with the 80's show, it would seem to be a pretty sure bet that 1974 is what gets played, as we're now past three months since the previous '74 airing. 1973 would be a strong bet as well, but it's drought is two months shorter. It actually won't surprise me one bit if we hear both the shows in the next couple weeks...

WMGN will air 11/04/72 this weekend as they once again reject carrying the last 3 hours of a four-hour show for the fourth straight time (3 were "A" shows). As an old geezer who'd rather hear '72, this makes me happy, but I'm fascinated that MGN would rather play a year they'd otherwise consider "too old" than do the last-3-hours deal. I wonder if they'd gotten complaints from listeners when they ran the truncated shows. Or, for that matter, why not run all four hours (it would end at 1am instead of midnight, hardly a disruption of anything other than jockless overnight programming).

Despite the upbeat story Casey tells about Player in the 1978 show, this weekend back then was the beginning of the end for them. A 7 notch climb for "Prisoner of Your Love" which I think should have been a top 10 hit like their first two hits was followed by a one notch climb and then a fall out of the top 40. So up 7 notches to 28 this week and out of the top 40 altogether two weeks later. But the weekend of this show back then was when they had a concert in Miami in which tensions in the band broke out which led to their breakup soon thereafter. BTW, for those of you who are big fans of pop music in the late 70s but are not fans of the Gibb family...almost seems like an oxymoron IMO...this is your week. Only back to back weeks between May 1977 and July 1979 in which no Gibb family songs are on AT40 and this is one of those weeks.
With the help of the archive songs, a pair of notable songs in this week's show....the last #1 hits for the Supremes and Beatles and the two big hits that Randy Newman had a hand in.

On 12/16/78, when it was #1, Casey played the version that the DJ (Gary Guthrie) originally patched together, instead of the official version that Barbra and Neil cut together after Guthrie's makeshift duet began to catch on.

I do not yet have date confirmation on the 70s for next week as of yet. I know there's the post above, but at the moment I can't confirm or refute it.
I do have the 80s, however, and I'll be posting that momentarily.

KLFM went '72. I don't think they like the 4-hour shows.

I'm calling BS on that story Casey told before playing "Someday We'll Be Together" about the three original Supremes being secretaries at Motown before forming the group and achieving superstardom. I think Casey's research team got this group confused with another Motown girl group, Martha & The Vandellas, because it's common knowledge that Martha Reeves DID start out as a secretary for Motown. But I've NEVER before read or heard of Diana, Mary, or Flo being secretaries there or anywhere. (Besides, the Supremes started out as a foursome. Original member Barbara Martin left around 1961 or 62, long before they hit it big.)

So it looks like WRIT is saying 1976 for next weekend...I'm guessing 11/6/76 (since it will be Nov. 7th). Maybe they go with 11/9/74 and 11/17/73 the following weeks? Time will tell...
