AT40 expanded to four hours with the first week of October, 1978, but one of the new features that was introduced to fill extra time, the recaps of last week's top three, didn't begin until the last week of February 1979. The shows from in between often have multiple seemingly random extras. Another period that was a hotbed of extras was the show's first few months on the air in 1970. IIRC, Premiere has re-run a few shows from that time frame with as many as six extras, although that may have included "the song that was #1 on this date [5,10,15,20] years ago", which could be considered a regular feature in that era, similar to the recaps and archive songs later on. (Another regular feature in the show's early days, though it wasn't around yet at the very beginning, was to play a song from that week's #1 album.) It's my understanding that Top 40 stations of the era would typically mix in an "oldie" every so many songs, and AT40 appears to have been trying to emulate that. The extras soon declined in number, probably due to some combination of the countdown songs getting longer (so there wasn't as much time available to play extras) and staff simply deciding to play fewer of them. Also, at this point there was only one LDD per show.

If that's the case, my money is on: 'A' Show: 2/12/72 'B' Show: 2/5/77 (was played last year, so it's hosted by Larry M)

What is wrong with Rewind 103.9? Tonight they are playing the 80's show.A couple of weeks ago they aired the current AT40 with Ryan Seacrest. I guess they aren't paying attention to what show they put in their computer?

I don't think I had ever heard Don't Hold Back by Chanson before and really don't care to hear it again

Well this is interesting... KOLA is confirming 2/5/77 for next week's show. Link: www.kolafm.com/casey-kasem/KOLA played the "B" show this past week so maybe we know what the "B" show is this week? Remember that Milwaukee Oldies website says next weekend's show is from 1972.

I'm inclined to think that 2/12/72 will be the designated A show next week.

What a blast hearing an early '79 show this week - it was right when I started devoutly following the 40. My 14 yr old self would sit there every Saturday with my spiral notebook (complete with Steve Miller's Book of Dreams cover art!) and a red Bic stic duly noting each title & position.
Interesting that Casey said "Le Freak" was in it's 5th week at the top, when it was actually the 6th. I'm assuming that the discrepancy is due to the frozen chart at the end of '78.

I started listening devoutly to AT40 just a few months before you... late 1978, my 6th grade year. I also had a notebook where I would record the Top 40... #1 - #25 on the front side, and #26 - #40 on the back side along with the droppers. I wish I had kept those notebooks!

As a rule AT40, at least in those days, did not count the 'frozen week' in 'weeks at #xx' computations. I was also 14 when I started writing down the chart every weekend, but it was seven years earlier, at the start of 1972. (oops, have to correct: I was still 13, did not turn 14 until April of '72)

I'm inclined to think that 2/12/72 will be the designated A show next week. As I can think of no good reason why Premiere would repeat a show first aired last year as the "A" show for this coming weekend (referring to 2/5/77), I'd say money is on 1972 for the "A" show. Unfortunately, I still don't know whether that's going to be 2/5 or 2/12. Chances are, I'll end up finding out when everybody else does on this one.

Look at what one of the songs in this week's show is!
10: 50 WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR LOVER -PAUL SIMON

^That would change very soon about the way they handled frozen weeks. By the time they did the disco special 5 months later, they were referring to "Le Freak" spending 6 weeks at #1. Same thing happened with "Tonight's the Night" which had been referred to as having spent 7 weeks on top but then they said 8 weeks.
Paul Simon's song was on XM this week not a Premiere show.

I'm a long time listener, first time caller you might say. I still have my notebooks, & was flipping thru as I listened this morning. The annotations cracked me up - a bit later on in the year, I put no less than 5 exclamation points next to Roger ("Get Used To It") Voudouris' name because I didn't know how to spell it. I usually kept my budding rock critic out of the pages, but wasn't above putting an occasional YUCK! or YAY! next to an entry.
