briguy... While there were many songs moving up the chart, very few of the songs receive airplay today, hence my comment. Outside of Bad Company's song and America's tune, very few other tunes get any airplay. That may be true, but I've also just as often seen Premiere move outside its "comfort zone." Hence, the reason for the wide variety of other possible extras, such as the ones I picked. (And they're not even country songs that made the Hot 100 but failed to crack the top 40.) Brian

Catching up after a couple weeks out of town, here's a comment in classic "throwing in my two cents" fashion... Responding to commentary about Premiere's recent re-airing of the July 28th, 1979 show: [ . . . ] I enjoyed Casey's anecdote about the length of Elton John's record collection if it was stacked up--it would top the Empire State Building! I also enjoyed the humorous comment on "pickle-hating" Joe Jackson. BTW, did Casey ever do a stretch story on another famous Joe Jackson: Shoeless Joe? I'm almost positive that at some point when "Say It Isn't So" by Daryl Hall and John Oates was in the countdown (October 29th, 1983 through February 4th, 1984), Casey (or possibly a guest host) told the sad story of Shoeless Joe, because of the "Say it ain't so, Joe!" phrase from baseball lore -- perhaps someone with access to shows from that time frame would be able to elaborate...

I know I do-It's a shame that most of the affiliate stations don't see fit to air the OE's-It's possible that they have a large commercial load that has to be blown out.

KOOL 94.5 FM has the 8/26/74 playlist posted including the extras:
Hour #1: "Can't Get Enough" by Bad Company Hour #2: "Surfin' USA" by The Beach Boys Hour #3: "Tin Man" by America
Congratulations to freakyflybry and mrjukebox for correctly guessing all three optional extras this week!

Gang, does anybody else LIKE to hear the OE's, at the end of each hour? Dave, if a song from the original show is bumped to optional extra status, then I like hearing it played. If the optional extras are songs moving up the chart but below the Top 40 and therefore not featured in the original airing, I can go either way... I don't have to hear them but it's a nice complement to the show. Having said that... I wish that a given station would either play all of the optional extras or none. If a station can sell extra ad time and therefore not play the extras... good for them as the show is making money for the station! But if a station plays one extra, I wish they would play them all.

One station I used for the 80s only played 2. My thought is either play all 4 or none. That is why I asked here on another thread which station was the best (and thanks who helped).

Interesting piece of trivia regarding "Surfin USA" by The Beach Boys-Anybody who has an encyclopedic knowledge of oldies is aware of the fact that the melody of "Surfin" was lifted directly from Chuck Berry's # 2 smash from early 1958 "Sweet Little Sixteen"-Eventually,Berry got wind of it & took The Beach Boys to court for plagarism-The suit was subsequently settled out of court & future pressings of the 45 listed Chuck Berry as the main songwriter.

Gang, does anybody else LIKE to hear the OE's, at the end of each hour? I like hearing the optional extras, too. But on stations like WODC or KOKZ that take special care in airing AT40, I prefer if they replaced at least one extra with a regional extra. The Canadian affiliates do a good job of exposing great lost hits from the Great White North. I'm sure there were great lost hits that were huge in Columbus and Waterloo.

Prediction for next week's show: 1st Guess: 8/29/70 2nd Guess: 8/28/76 Time for the first 1970 show of the year? Since it'll be Labor Day weekend, I'll predict that whatever they play will be supplemented with another installment of the 70s #1 hits series, which was started on Memorial Day weekend and continued on/around July 4th.
