^That happened quite frequently with rap hits, especially "Boom! Shake The Room" and "Whoomp! (There It Is)," although these were more like song drops. After awhile in 1994, "The Sign" would begin with the opening beats and then conclude with the final words in the song, "I saw the sign." Probably not more than 5 seconds. Why was that? "The Sign" is certainly not a controversial song with 'objectionable' lyrics. Wasn't listening after '88, so it's an honest question. Probably since it was on the charts for so long, they got sick of it.

I was listening to the current version of AT40 on iHeartRadio this morning, and one of the Breakouts was "I Love It" by Kanye West. Ryan said it was something like 1:53, beating the current record of the year, "Mine" at 2:09.
If it debuts, I believe it'll be the shortest song at least of the century. I'm not sure what the last song was shorter than that. But I believe "Bizarre Love Triangle" by Frente! was the shortest of the '90s, around 1:55.

I know it did on Dees and CT, but I can't remember it hitting AT.

It didn't chart on AT40, but R&R has been part of AT40's history since Casey restarted the show in 1998.

It would be interesting to note if Ryan would reference it. I'm sure he would because AT 40 history is now essentially R and R history...at least until 1973. I doubt if we will ever get the chance, however. "I Love It" is down almost 20 percent this week from its spin count last week and out of the mediabase top 40 (not including recurrents). Would have been neat, though!

Does 1 minute and 30 seconds of Barry White's "It's Esctacy When You Lay Down Next to Me" from 1977 count?

Was I Likes To Do It by Peoples Choice at #40 this past week the shortest (edited) song ever on AT40? It couldn't have been more than a minute the way they edited it. OK, it was on AT40 for two weeks, Sept. 4 (#40 ) and Sept. 11 (#38.) You don't say what your source was for hearing this edited version. On the original broadcasts, it lasted 2:08 on Sept. 4, and 2:10 on Sept. 11. And it was "The People's Choice," in 1971, later truncated when they signed with Philadelphia International ( and hit with "Do it Any Way You Wanna") to just "People's Choice."

I've reached the point at which I sometimes can't remember things from a couple of days ago so remembering what station I heard this on in 2011 is probably not going to happen.

On 8/27/77, "Boogie Nights" by Heatwave debuted at #40 and ran only about 50 seconds in the version I heard when Premiere played it last year. Not sure if that was Premiere's doing or if it was that short originally. Rob's book notes that Barry White's "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me" was cut down to only about 1:12 on 12/17/77 (its last week on.) I have the 8/27/77 show on cd and it was the 45 version.. so premire really chopped it up..

I think Ryan mentioned that “Billie Eilish” by Armani White was 1:34.

I think Ryan mentioned that “Billie Eilish” by Armani White was 1:34. Ryan pointed out in the year end countdown, as he had in previous shows, that Armani White's "Billie Eilish" is the shortest unedited song on AT40 possibly ever, going back to 1970. And the longest song to chart this year was "Happier Than Ever" by....Billie Eilish. Another recent entry on the shortest AT40 songs list was "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X from 2019 which clocked in at about 1:54, at least as heard on the countdown (generally the version with Billy Ray Cyrus was played.)

For one of the 1/5/1974 AT40: The 70's OPTIONAL EXTRAS: Larry Morgan mentioned "I Love" by Tom T. Hall clocks in at 2 minutes and 6 seconds.

A few weeks ago, Ryan mentioned that for the first time on AT40, there were 3 songs in the countdown that were under 2 minutes. I don't have the exact times, but they were "Barbie World," "Speed Drive" and "Lil Boo Thang."
