One of my favorite songs, so it was great to hear as an extra - but - is it unusual for there to be as many as five weeks before it makes the Top 40 to be chosen as an extra by Premiere?
It is an autumn hit after all, and this weekend was July. So it seemed a little out of place.

It is an autumn hit after all, and this weekend was July. So it seemed a little out of place. Not necessarily. It did enter the Hot 100 on 7/31/76 (at #83) and Hot 100 debuts are often chosen as extras, especially ones that, like "Don't Fear the Reaper", are still well known and played today.

There are 4 types of OEs and someone who has been follwoing them for a few years should rank these according to their frequency....songs that debuted in the HOT 100...songs that are a week away from hitting the 40....songs in between the first 2 types.....and original extras. I think the first 2 types are the most prevalent.
On second thought, don't rank these by frequency.....for those of you who like to guess the OEs, that would handicap the guessing a little bit.

In other words, songs that didn't make the top 40 or weren't released as a single (e.g. "I Melt With You" or the Bee Gees' "More Than a Woman"), or songs like the one we will hear this week by the Big Man ("Your a Friend of Mine"), played solely in memory of the artists' passing. These types of extras aren't played often, but seem to need their own category.

BOC's "Don't Fear the Reaper" is a great song, I always associate with the part in "Halloween" when JLC was driving around in a sweet huge 2-door and loud in the background...? I think Michael was on the sidewalk?

Hot 100 debuts are often chosen as extras, especially ones that, like "Don't Fear the Reaper", are still well known and played today. And also if the song debuted really high, like Stuck With You on this week's 1986 show; it entered the Hot 100 at #42.

And sometimes B-sides of current Top 40 hits and medleys.
One week in 1978, they had Casey (from 2007) talking about the first Long Distance Dedication.

I was just listening to Grazing In The Grass by Hugh Masekela.
SNL should have used that one.

These types of extras aren't played often, but seem to need their own category. And a sixth type - a song by an artist who recently passed away, if they have a charted song from the year of the show, though not necessarily from the same time of year (sort of like they're doing with "Just Once" by James Ingram as the first extra for this week's upcoming "B" show).
