Hey, Joel Whitburn says that My Name Is by Eminem is a novelty song, but NONE of his other VERY SIMILAR songs are not.... If you think songs like "The Way I Am", "Stan", "Lose Yourself", "Cleanin' Out My Closet" or "Love The Way You Lie" count as novelties... And even some of his most (supposedly) comedic songs like "My Name Is", "Guilty Conscience", "The Real Slim Shady" and "Without Me" are, when listened closely, very pointed and intelligent satires.

Bertha Butt Boogie is great but every time I see a girl with a huge behind, that song plays in my mind.... My fave line of last week's shows came from that song........It all started way back then. I'm not gonna lie to ya. Yeah...sock it to me, sock it to me. May not have gotten it word for word but I will next week cuz that song will be featured once again, this time on SXM!

I didn't say that, I said NONE of his songs were novelty songs. I was pointing out yet another mistake by Whitburn & company.
Eminem is one of the few rappers I can stand, because he is smart and intelligent. Yeah his songs are funny, but they are in no way, shape or form, a novelty song....

Since Halloween is a few weeks away, these songs come to mind:
"Werewolves Of London" by Warren Zevon "Little Red Riding Hood" by Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs

Ray Stevens had more famous novelties like "Gitarzan" "Ahab the Arab" and of course "The Streak". But I always thought his 1979 song "I Need Your Help Barry Manilow" was comedy genius, and rooting for the song to enter the Top 40 at the time. Unfortunately, it didn't and despite getting to #11 on the AC chart, only reached #49 on Hot 100. And how many Manilow titles can you recognise from the latter part of the lyrics? I'm a big Weird Al fan, so Eat It jumps right out at me. Take Off is great and I did like Mr. Jaws as well.

My most favorite novelty songs to enter AT40:
"In the Mood" - Henhouse Five Plus Two (1977) "The Rainbow Connection" - Kermit the Frog (1979) "General Hospi-tale" - The Afternoon Delights (1981, yes that is one song I like from a year that I despise for music) "Pac-Man Fever" - Buckner & Garcia (1982) "Who Let The Dogs Out?" - Baha Men (2000)
And, despite my strong taste for late-70s and 80s fare, my most favorite, oddly enough, is from 2001...
"Because I Got High" - Afroman
Of the songs I listed, I hardly hear any of them anymore.

The Curly Shuffle - Jump 'N The Saddle Band (nyuk! nyuk!) Like blackbowl68, I also like "Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me). And this video gets it right. The lyric following Joanie Sommers in the final verse is "Ides Of March", not "Osmond Brothers" as posted on several lyrics web sites. www.youtube.com/watch?v=16kh-AP4OCU

One of my favorite novelty songs from 1976 is 'Junk Food Junkie' by Larry Groce. When the song was a hit in 1976 I always thought the guy's name should have been Larry GROSS (I guess as a teenager I thought it would be a great inside joke that a song about junk food would be by a guy named gross).

Necro-ing this topic because something happened this past year that had only happened twice before: A song appearing on both the year-end charts of AT40 and Dr. Demento.
In 1976, "Junk Food Junkie" by Larry Groce was #94 on AT40 and #11 on Dr. D In 1982, "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner & Garcia was #58 on AT40 and #15 on Dr. D
And now, in 2019, we have Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus. "Old Town Road" ended up #28 on AT40's Top 40 of 2019, and #3 on Dr. Demento's Funny 25 of 2019.
There's not a lot of crossover between the two shows, but when it happens, it makes me (a fan of both) smile. 😊
(And for those of you wondering about Ray Stevens' "The Streak" in 1974. Whereas it did get a lot of airplay on Dr. Demento, it did not end up among his Funny 25 of that year (though it was played as an Extra on that show). Surprised me too...)
