I have just read all the posts in this thread and no one has pointed out that this month of August 1982 and this week that is being played features a top 5 that is the same for the entire month. It is the only month in the rock era and pre-Soundscan era that the top 5 is the same for an entire month! Not sure if that has anything to do with this being the first ever show played from that month.

Good eye dukedeb. I know that happened a bunch during '82 (several songs holding positions while others taking huge climbs and drops), but that is wild that the top 5 was the same for an entire month. What a crazy year that was for chart action!

That kinda reminds me of the AC chart back in 2001. As of the June 15 chart and continuing through to the October 26 chart, there was not one new entry in the Top Five. I mean, the songs did move around a little within the Top Five, but still, over four months with no new songs in the Top Five - strange. Those songs, btw, were: I Hope You Dance - Lee Ann Womack Thank You - Dido If You're Gone - Matchbox Twenty There You'll Be - Faith Hill Only Time - Enya OK, I realize that's a little off topic there - back to 1982

Darn, if only the top 5 were for Hervard's sake:
Double Dutch Bus Another One Bites The Dust Kiss and Say Goodbye Still No More Tears (Enough is Enough)
and the extra would be All out of Love ;D

Oh, that's cute, guys! Real cute! You also forgot "Drive" by the Cars and "Pop Muzik" by M. BTW, I never say "No. Just no" about "Every Breath You Take". Just something about it being the most overplayed song of the 80s. Oh, and I don't like "Another One Bites The Dust" because of the overplay, both back in 1980 and today on 80s stations.

Ok, this may not apply to that last statement but why do you guys make just a big deal over whether a song was played too much back in the day? I mean we are talking 25, 30, 35, 40 years ago depending on which song. Why does it matter in 2011?

^Probably because some of us are still burned out on these songs that were overplayed back in the day. For me, "Every Breath You Take" and "Another One Bites The Dust" are two perfect examples (and my last sentence in my post above was in reply to bestmusicexpert's question).

It's another 1982 show so it's time for another factoid. In the category of most weeks at a position before hitting #1 in the pre-Soundscan era, 1982 has most of the upper positions. Most weeks at #3 before hitting #1....4 weeks by Abracadabra. Most weeks at #4 before hitting #1....5 weeks by I Can't Go For That. Most weeks at #5 before hitting #1....4 weeks by Hard to Say I'm Sorry. And the weeks for Abra and Hard to Say were the SAME weeks.

The summer of 1982 had some of the biggest "traffic jams" in Hot 100 history. Several weeks the top 5 all stayed the same, and in August, the top 10 all stayed the exact same - one of only three times that ever happened (the others were in 1978 and 1983). Most of it was because the songs all had "superstars" week after week and were stuck in position. Casey even mentioned it a couple of times on the show - he stated that after 4 weeks at No. 5 it looked like "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" would peak there. In September he also commented on the summer and how it was competitive, but now things are breaking up a bit and songs are moving around more. That's one reason why Fleetwood Mac was at No. 4 for 7 weeks. True enough, in early September only three songs in the top 10 had "stars" which meant the others could fall allowing for some movement. Surprising what you remember after all these years - haven't heard those shows since they aired. Usually I just listen to the '70s countdowns since I heard most of the '80s when they originally aired!

Bumping this thread in response to another 1982 thread that was started in the last few days... Here's that thread: at40fg.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=classic&action=display&thread=2706The summer of 1982 had some of the biggest "traffic jams" in Hot 100 history. Several weeks the top 5 all stayed the same, and in August, the top 10 all stayed the exact same - one of only three times that ever happened (the others were in 1978 and 1983)....Most of it was because the songs all had "superstars" week after week and were stuck in position. The other two instances were mentioned earlier in this thread. I believe this is the complete list: 8/19/78 (top 14 stayed the same) 8/28/82 (top 12 stayed the same) 4/2/83 (top 11 stayed the same) While '82 was extreme, the whole period from about 1977 to 1983 was marked by slow turnover in the upper reaches of the chart -- it's not surprising that all three instances of this were during that timeframe. The week before the top 12 stayed the same on 8/28/82, the top seven stayed the same (8/21/82). Another oddity is that on 9/11/82 ten of the thirteen positions between #5 and #17 stayed the same, although everything above #5 moved that week. Surprising what you remember after all these years - haven't heard those shows since they aired. Usually I just listen to the '70s countdowns since I heard most of the '80s when they originally aired! I listened to AT40 in the '80s (I first discovered the show somewhere around the beginning of 1980, when I was nine years old) and consider myself more of a fan of '80s pop than '70s pop, but I find that if I can only listen to one show on a given weekend, it's usually the '70s version. I suppose I've heard the music from the '80s programs more over the years, so the music from the '70s shows is fresher to me. Also, while I wouldn't claim to specifically remember much that Casey said on any one '80s program, when forced to choose I guess I'd rather hear a show I know I've never heard before.
