Rick also said he was 34 but Petty would have been 37 that year.

The bonus hour for D2K and the normal Top 40 was: November 8, 2008. One would think that show will be played in full 11/4 or 11/11 this year.. So will we see another 2008 show up before then? I hope not but you never know with the current rotation. Also, I was thinking... this year Rick covered 5 years in the D2K series.. 2001, 2002, 2003, 2008 and 2009. Will he do the other half in 2018? That would mean 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 should be in store for the new year.

Congratulations go out to French Montana for having the highest debut in the history of the Weekly Top 40 when, "Unforgettable" checked in at number 11 last week. Of course this record should be short lived because "1-800-273-8255" still has not debuted, and it has a decent shot at hitting #1 on AT 40.
Rick celebrated the momentous occasion by saying absolutely nothing about it, not even mentioning it was new to the chart.
I have listened to Dees since 1984. When I think of all the songs that could have been the highest debut ever, from MJ and "Thriller" up to a few weeks ago and Taylor Swift and "Look What You Made me Do", you could have given me a million guesses and I would have never selected, "Unforgettable" by French Montana.

Of course this record should be short lived because "1-800-273-8255" still has not debuted, and it has a decent shot at hitting #1 on AT 40. When I said, "this record should be short lived" I thought maybe a week, not the next segment! "1-800-273-8255" debuted last week on Dees at number nine, making it the only song in the 34 year history of the, "Weekly Top 40" to debut in the top 10. Congratulations go out to Logic, Alessia Cara and Khalid. Dees celebrated the momentous occasion by saying that the song was an "interesting debut". Nothing else was said about it being the highest debut ever, much less debuting in the top 10. So the two highest debuts ever on Dees happened the same week (10/14/17). How about that? While I have grown used to Dees correcting the charts over the last few years when a song that was less HAC made a good run up the chart, it still blows my mind it took him to this point to put both of these songs on the top 40. In perspective, I believe "1-800" is in its 13th week on American Top 40 and just made the top 10 (leaping 16-10). Dees already has it charting higher in its first week. This is why I love listening to the top 40 shows: you never know when you will hear something that you have never heard before!

So does an asterisk have to be put on those records because the he adjusts the charts according to his whims or whatever?

So does an asterisk have to be put on those records because the he adjusts the charts according to his whims or whatever? So, yes and no. Sometimes his chart corrections are just way overdue: these two songs are case in point. However, Swift debuting at 12 a few weeks ago was definitely legitimate. When a song that gets past 20 on AT, and hasn't debuted on Dees, I prepare myself for these massive debuts now. Sometimes, Dees gets lucky: "Black Beatles" started to play out (I think it peaked at 14 or 13) and he never was forced to put it on. These two songs, however, have been fascinating to track. They looked like they would peak as low as 30 or so on AT, but they just continued to get more and more spins, particularly "1-800". It will be interesting to see if it can get to #1 on AT. I thought it would, but the top 6 has gone crazy on Mediabase over the last week with Swift dropping fast, Demi's "Sorry, Not Sorry" rising fast, and Charlie Puth consistently holding to the same number of spins even though he has been out of the top spot for a couple of weeks now. In a couple of weeks, now on both Dees and AT, you probably will have Logic and Portugal. The Man in the top 3. That's amazing.

It would be nice if he could sneak in a few shows from those five years either now or in 2018. My biggest fear is that he will have only 52 shows in the D2K series as he has pretty much done in the 80s and 90s series in the last few years. I am really enjoying the D2K shows because I am hearing songs I haven't heard since their release year, but hopefully his catalog of shows is much bigger than 52 for the decade. I think I will send Rick a friendly email in February expressing my feelings about not repeating shows on all three retro series he is currently providing.

^Especially since other shows prior to the 52/53 constantly on repeat have aired before. I was fortunate to catch a good handful of these (80s & 90s) before the repeat cycle started.

I love that Rick Dees played his own song "Disco Duck" (at least part of) on the 1987 show this week. Rick, you one-hit wonder..lol

Why all that repetition with extra songs in the segments of current CHR and HAC shows?
During all these past weeks
Examples:
EX ▪ BOOM CLAP – CHARLI XCX
EX ▪ NOT A BAD THING – JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
EX ▪ HAPPY – PHARRELL WILLIAMS

I love that Rick Dees played his own song "Disco Duck" (at least part of) on the 1987 show this week. Rick, you one-hit wonder..lol While he recounted the top 3 from that week in 1976 and muffed it up. That top 3 included "Disco Duck", "Play That Funky Music", and..."You Light Up My Life", from a year later.

Yeah I noticed his error too. I guess he just wanted it to sound as if his song was so good, it even ranked higher than one of the top songs of the 70s that week... Or he just simply didn't know what really was the Top 3 in '76' that week and You Light Up My Life was the only song that came to his mind. I say the latter..lol

Little did Rick know in the D2k show that MJ was about to celebrate the last Halloween of his life. "Sparks fly" when Rihanna and Chris Brown are on stage together. Yeah and a few months later, they will get out of hand!
