And with that, we avoid a 4-week recent repeat pattern. Hopefully this means 1987 will kick off September.
Also it means they'll be playing one of my favorite underrated Billy Joel songs.

If the VJ Big 40 Countdown decided to avoid Milli Vanilli songs, that would virtually eliminate the entire year 1989 from the show cycle, since the "group" is represented in nearly every countdown from that year (except for the first few weeks). Furthermore, in spite of the colossal scandal that destroyed Rob & Fab's career, most people who enjoyed the songs at the time probably still enjoy the songs now, which completely justifies including the songs in the countdown as well as in regular rotation on 80's on 8. Some of those Facebook comments are really silly, posted by some really uneducated chart followers. This is the board to come to for the real music fan. If it charted then, play it now! On Facebook, there is someone who continues to ask, every single week that a Dan Fogelberg song plays, for the banning of "Same Old Lang Syne" because it promotes splitting a six-pack of beer in a parked car. This is what we're dealing with over on that Facebook page. Kelly Dean Hansen, a person with whom I have sometimes communicated with on Facebook during the past couple of years, asked me last Friday to post this rebuttal to your (Benster72) comments because he had been prevented from registering for this forum.

Open comment to Kelly:
For your sake (and yours alone), I hope there is a loosening of the registration policies sometime soon. You seem like an astute and articulate music fan who would make great contributions to this Forum. We can always use more 80s chart buffs around here.
By the way, another great Midwestern singer/songwriter, Bob Seger, has some drinking and driving going on in his hit record, "Roll Me Away." I'm wondering if that has gone unnoticed as well. Over the years, my observation has been that, when it comes to listening to song lyrics, the vast majority of people focuses on hook lines and blocks out the verses. So, yes, it probably has.
Too bad about the whole Roger Waters flap. It was good, though, that you rattled Jim Ryan's cage a bit. He's got it coming, big time. In fact, I would have rattled it further. I would have asked him, "OK, Jim. Thank you for the insight into how you don't choose the chart dates from week to week. Now how the hell do you choose them?"

Did anybody notice on this week's 1981 countdown that they played a different recording of Greg Kihn's "The Breakup Song" than the one that was a hit. And I can almost swear that this is the second time this alternate version has been played during a summer of '81 countdown. What's up with that!?

I'd say chalk it up to the unpaid interns, and also to misfortune on the artist's part. Some singer/songwriters who have lost the publishing rights to their material will re-record it. This doesn't mean the tried and true radio version just vanishes into thin air, however. The countdown "staff" just needs someone who actually was alive in 1981 to listen to samples of these songs and let them know which is the right one to play.

Now it's saying that this week they're doing 1987? Did they seriously change to a chart date they did last year AGAIN?

If this ends up being the case, I think we're going to have to send an e-mail to the PD asking him to do something about these excessive chart repeats and errors, especially the early and late 80s (but also every 80s year) they continue to make every week. You'd think after 10 years something would click for the management to finally listen but no...

Does anybody know how to get in touch with the PD? Maybe if a bunch of us contact him at the same time, he would take notice.

If you check on the 80s on 8 page, they have an e-mail address but I'm not sure whether or not they even check that anymore. Have any of the VJs confirmed it though, because it could easily be another screw-up on whoever's in charge of advertising their shows.

And if they switched to put 8/29/87 this week and 1985 next week, that's two weeks in a row we get the same week from Casey via Premiere. At least their oft-rerun 8/19/89 countdown didn't have that particular demerit.

I just noticed they played "Alone" by Heart around the beginning of the hour just now and thought they were doing an early airing and they did go with 1987, but turns out that wasn't the case, so maybe there is a chance that it was a typo. but we'll see.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the reason for the switch was because they saw people complaining that 1987 was overdue?

And then if we find out it's a chart repeat, it could come back to haunt them to those people who complained that 1987 was overdue and gets something for nothing.

So my hunch is right. They are doing 1985! So that means 1987's more than likely next week.

Before #16, Nina mentions the whole "Snuggles" story from American Top 40. Of course the song she was intro'ing was "Dare Me".
