Next week it'll be all about 1984. That means each year has been done twice so far. If they do that 80s Cruise replay for Memorial Day weekend like the past two years, I'm sure that means no special countdown, and if that's the case, we're looking at another 1982 show for that weekend, albeit a week earlier than last year's.

I overheard Nina announce that there will be a special countdown next weekend.

I overheard Nina announce that there will be a special countdown next weekend. Yes, it's supposedly going to feature songs that hit #1 during the summer months of the 1980s. I'm not sure there are even 40 such songs to pick from, but logic has never been an issue before...

Chicago, Night Ranger and more!
They are changing the advertisement online this week. An artist in the first hour and then an artist with a song in the mid-teens.

Still better than two random artists in the first hour.
I'll have to count how many songs hit #1 during those summers. I think 1983 had just 2 different songs.

Using June, July, and August as the summer months, yes, there are over 40 Billboard Hot 100 #1's from summers 1980-89. Not all of which get much recurrent play, other than countdowns, on 80s on 8 or elsewhere. And depending on definiton, 1983 did only have two such songs, "Flashdance...What a Feeling" and "Every Breath You Take". If you count up to the first weekend in September (Labour Day) then "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" makes the cut.

I did overhear Nina say "June, July, and August" when talking about the countdown when I first heard it mentioned, so I wouldn't be surprised if they leave September out.

How will they decide on the top 40?

Hopefully not like for that other one where they just featured songs from early in the decade that spent like 3 weeks on top.

No preview after the countdown ended. What year do you think will be the week after next?

Laura, 1982 should be the next year played after the #1 special. Since 82 was played last, we heard all the other nine years in this order: 89, 87, 83, 81, 85, 86, 80, 88, and 84. However, with the VJs is anything ever really predictable? 82 would be the first year to be played 3 times this year, and hopefully the other nine years would follow. I find it interesting how they are doing five odd years followed by four or five even years since the middle of January.

It could be, even though it will be using 5/29 like last year, unless they switch that and 1989 around.

No preview after the countdown ended. What year do you think will be the week after next? Unfortunately, if 1982 or 1989 were going to be covered, we're going to be dealing with a chart repeat either way. Both the charts for May 29, 1982 and June 3, 1989 will be closer to May 31 than the charts for May 27, 1989 and June 5, 1982. I'd hate for then to go with the June 3, 1989 chart for the third straight year.

And only five of those predated 1986 (1982-84 had none at all). I counted 57 songs that began their runs at #1 in June, July, or August 1980-1989. I wonder which 17 will be omitted? Something tells me tonight's advertisement will not read "Michael Damian, Bette Midler and more!"
