Inspired by last week's AT40: The 80's show, I started wondering what songs made the biggest moves within the top 40 but never managed to hit the top 10.
Examples:
Shadows of the Night -- moved 40-23, peaked at #12 Eat It -- moved 36-18, also peaked at #12
Any others? Anything bigger?

I was always baffled that Duran Duran's Rio went 31-17 in April of 83, but then stalled out at 14 a couple of weeks later.

In 2003, Christina Aguilera moved 40-24 with "The Voice Within"; it failed to reach the top 10, peaking at #12 (not sure where it peaked on Seacrest's version of the chart as by the time it peaked, he was hosting.)

One 1970 hit that was overlooked here was the Who's "See Me, Feel Me". On 11/21/70, it jumped from 24 to 12, stayed there a second week, and then fell back to 25.
"The Voice Within" moved 16-13-14 during Casey's last few AT40s (on his final show it was also an LDD.) Starting with Seacrest's first show (1/10/04), it went 13-12-17-15-16-22-off.

In 1982, there was Jennifer Holliday's "I'm Telling You..." which made a mighty move from 39 to 29 in its second week, yet never made it past No. 22.

One song that made *two* respectable chart leaps within the Top 40 and still missed the Top 10 -- Three Dog Night's "The Family of Man." It moved from 36-27-15 and eventually peaked at #12.
And one record that doesn't quite fit the criteria, yet I believe is noteworthy in this thread is "The Battle Hymn of Lt. Calley" by C Company featuring Terry Nelson. It debuted in the Hot 100 at #41 and then peaked the following two weeks at #37.

I was listening to 10/30/82 just now, and Casey noted that It's Raining Again debuted on the entire Hot 100 at #31. Then, oddly, it only reached #11.
