American Top 40: The 70s - March 14, 2015
This week's presentation - March 19, 1977
Droppers:
CAR WASH - ROSE ROYCE (38) - This song wasn't bad, though somewhat overplayed.
I WISH - STEVIE WONDER (32/28) - Good song, but I prefer many others from him. Note its double chart position. This was because at the end of Hour 2 of the previous week's show, AT40 was contacted by Billboard and informed that there were three last minute changes in compiling the chart. Its real position on the Hot 100 is listed before its AT40 position.
BITE YOUR LIP (GET UP AND DANCE) - ELTON JOHN (28/26) - This was another one of those songs whose chart position was affected by the "last minute changes". As for the song, it was a good one - no clue why it suddenly hit a brick wall and ended up spending only six weeks on the Hot 100.
LIVING NEXT DOOR TO ALICE - SMOKIE (25) - Great song! I like the remix version of this one where, after they sing the title, a crowd of people shout "ALICE?? WHO THE F--K IS ALICE??"
40: I WANNA GET NEXT TO YOU - ROSE ROYCE (debut) - Wow, they replaced themselves on the countdown this week. As "Car Wash" steps off the chart, their new song debuts! This one was pretty good - I prefer it slightly over "Car Wash".
39: SPRING RAIN - SILVETTI (debut) - Good song. This one had kind of a weird chart run; it dropped off the following week, then two weeks later, it re-entered the Top 40 for an additional two weeks.
38: ALL STRUNG OUT ON YOU - JOHN TRAVOLTA (debut) - This one was pretty good.
37: LIDO SHUFFLE - BOZ SCAGGS (debut) - Great song! One of his best songs!
36: ENJOY YOURSELF - JACKSONS (23) - Meh, not one of my favorites. I preferred their earlier material.
35: AT MIDNIGHT - RUFUS (39) - I'm not a huge fan of them in general, but this one was actually pretty good.
34: DISCO LUCY - WILTON PLACE STREET BAND (37) - Very interesting disco cover of the classic TV show theme.
33: TRYING TO LOVE TWO - WILLIAM BELL (40) - This was a good song.
32: GLORIA - ENCHANTMENT (36) - Good song; typical 70s R&B slow jam.
31: WEEKEND IN NEW ENGLAND - BARRY MANILOW (18) - Great song! One of his best!
30: FREE - DENIECE WILLIAMS (34) - Good song. I like this and "Let's Hear It For The Boy" about the same.
29: THE FIRST CUT IS THE DEEPEST - ROD STEWART (31) - Good song. I slightly preferred Sheryl Crow's cover from 2003, since I'm more familiar with that one.
28: DO YA - ELO (33) - Good song, though definitely not one of my favorites from them.
27: NEW KID IN TOWN - EAGLES (14) - Great song! Possibly my favorite song from "Hotel California" (though the title track would be a close second).
OPTIONAL EXTRA: ANGEL IN YOUR ARMS - HOT - This song was pretty good, but nothing I'd go out of my way to listen to.
26: YEAR OF THE CAT - AL STEWART (8) - Great song, though ouch @ the huge drop!
25: RIGHT TIME OF THE NIGHT - JENNIFER WARNES (29) - Great song! My favorite song from her is probably "Nights Are Forever", an AC hit from the summer of 1983.
24: SAM - OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN (26/32) - This was the other of the three songs whose positions were changed after the show was two-thirds complete. But it actually worked to this song's advantage, as it was six positions higher than where it was originally listed. This was a pretty good song, though definitely not her best.
EXTRA: LOVE HANGOVER - DIANA ROSS - Meh, not one of my faves from her.
23: HERE COME THOSE TEARS AGAIN - JACKSON BROWNE (27) - Great song! This is possibly my favorite song from him. I was pleasantly surprised that they didn't edit this song, like they seemed to more often than not.
22: LONG TIME - BOSTON (22) - This was my least favorite of their singles from their self-titled album, but it was a great one nevertheless. I remember this one quite well, since the stations that I listened to back in 1977 played this one all the time.
21: SOUTHERN NIGHTS - GLEN CAMPBELL (30) - Great song, though not quite as good as "Rhinestone Cowboy".
20: CRACKERBOX PALACE - GEORGE HARRISON (24) - Another song that got much airplay on the stations I listened to. This was one of my favorite songs by George.
19: HOTEL CALIFORNIA - EAGLES (35) - Wow, this one definitely was on its way to the top with
18: BLINDED BY THE NIGHT - MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND (5) - Great song! One of my favorites from them! Too bad they had to go and butcher it!
17: SAY YOU'LL STAY UNTIL TOMORROW - TOM JONES (19) - Good, rockabilly-flavored hit.
16: SO INTO YOU - ATLANTA RHYTHM SECTION (21) - Great song, like most of their Top 40 hits.
15: CARRY ON WAYWARD SON - KANSAS (16) - Good song - another one I remember quite well.
14: I'VE GOT LOVE ON MY MIND - NATALIE COLE (20) - Good song, but I generally prefer her 80s/90s hits.
13: MAYBE I'M AMAZED - WINGS (15) - Great song! I definitely prefer this version over the studio version. Is it me, or did they do a major butchering job on this one?
12: BOOGIE CHILD - BEE GEES (12) - Meh, not one of their bests.
11: THE THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE - 10CC (13) - Great song! This sounded like something that Queen might sing.
10: GO YOUR OWN WAY - FLEETWOOD MAC (10) - Good song. A friend of mine misheard this song as "Junkyard old man".
9: DON'T LEAVE THIS WAY - THELMA HOUSTON (11) - Great song, though I actually preferred the cover version by the Communards, from ten years later.
8: DON'T GIVE UP ON US - DAVID SOUL (17) - Good song, though a little on the cheesy side.
7: TORN BETWEEN TWO LOVERS - MARY MacGREGOR (7) - This song, on the other hand - way on the cheesy side. At least they cut the second verse.
6: I LIKE DREAMIN' - KENNY NOLAN (3) - This is a good song as long as I don't get it stuck inside my head.
5: DANCING QUEEN - ABBA (6) - Great song! Very possibly my favorite song from them, though "Winner Takes It All" wouldn't far behind.
4: NIGHT MOVES - BOB SEGER (4) - Great song! I did prefer "Mainstreet", which hit a few months later - too bad it didn't quite match the success of this song.
3: RICH GIRL - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES (9) - Great song! One of their all-time best!
OPTIONAL EXTRA: LONELY BOY - ANDREW GOLD - Tell you what, Andrew has had only two Top 40 hits, but both of them are awesome! This is my favorite of the two.
2: FLY LIKE AN EAGLE - STEVE MILLER BAND (2) - Great song! Too bad this one just barely fell short of the top spot!
1: LOVE THEME FROM "A STAR IS BORN (EVERGREEN) - BARBRA STREISAND (1) - But if Steve Miller had to lose out, it might as well have been to a great song like this! One of my all-time favorites from Streisand!
