July 10, 1982I was kinda hoping they'd do the previous week so I could say goodbye to the three worst songs of 1982 all in one week (and no, I don't mean Tommy Tutone or Rick Springfield; despite the big gap between shows, we heard both debuting on the last 1982 show!) And we never got to hear such classics as "'65 Love Affair", "Get Down On It", or "Did It In A Minute", all of which I like a lot... but c'est la vie This show still has a lot of good songs on it, and 1982 had been overdue, so let's get into it! Falling off: Huey Lewis & the News - Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do (36) - good song, one of their most underrated Stevie Nicks - After The Glitter Fades (32) - I usually like her, but... wtf did this sound like again? Queen - Body Language (28) - I like this, but it's kinda weird for them. I prefer all of their other top 40 hits 40. J. Geils Band - Angel In Blue (40) - wtf did this sound like again? 39. Gary U.S. Bonds - Out Of Work (debut) - he has to be the most random comeback of the 80's. The song's pretty good though, definitely easy to tell Bruce Springsteen produced this 38. Van Halen - Dancing In The Street (38) - good remake but I prefer the David Bowie/Mick Jagger version 37. Blondie - Island of Lost Souls (37) - kinda weird for them but I like it 36. Leslie Pearl - If The Love Fits, Wear It (debut) - meh, nothing special 35. Neil Diamond - Be Mine Tonight (35) - wtf did this sound like again? 34. Larry Elgart & His Manhattan Swing Orchestra - Hooked On Swing (39) - No. Just no. 33. Heart - This Man Is Mine (33) - I usually like Heart and this was good too, but probably my least favourite top 40 hit from them 32. Melissa Manchester - You Should Hear How She Talks About You (debut) - good song! My favourite from her 31. Foreigner - Break It Up (26) - I like this one, definitely underrated 30. Ray Parker Jr. - The Other Woman (14) - good song! One of his best 29. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - Crimson and Clover (12) - good remake, I like this one more than the original 28. The Gap Band - Early In The Morning (31) - good song, not sure whether I prefer this or Robert Palmer's version 27. Rolling Stones - Going To A Go-Go (30) - I usually like them... this song was just so-so though LDD: Firefall - Just Remember I Love You - usually for me they're "wtf did this sound like again", but this song was alright (probably because it's been an LDD several times) 26. Chicago - Hard To Say I'm Sorry (34) - great song! My favourite on the chart so far 25. Crosby, Stills & Nash - Wasted On The Way (29) - I prefer their earlier stuff but this is alright too 24. Air Supply - Even The Nights Are Better (27) - good song! Maybe next time they do 1982, it'll be the week this went 6-off! I can't wait to comment on that if they do 23. Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots (23) - I like this but prefer "Fastlove" and "Men In Black", both of which sampled this 22. Karla Bonoff - Personally (25) - it's alright, actually 21. Rick Springfield - What Kind Of Fool Am I (21) - great song! One of his most underrated; at least on R&R it hit the top 10 20. Journey - Still They Ride (24) - good song but my least favourite single from the "Escape" album 19. Willie Nelson - Always On My Mind (6) - it's alright but I prefer the Pet Shop Boys version (wow, this is the THIRD song with two charting versions in the 80's on this show!) 18. Alabama - Take Me Down (18) - No. Just no. 17. Kansas - Play The Game Tonight (17) - it's alright but I prefer their big 70's hits, as well as "All I Wanted" 16. REO Speedwagon - Keep The Fire Burnin' (20) - good song, my favourite uptempo from them though I prefer their ballads 15. Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra (19) - great song! Pretty much the only post-70's song from them that matches up with their classics; I'm surprised the full version was played as AT40 usually faded it out! 14. Ronnie Milsap - Any Day Now (15) - it's an alright song but I prefer his 1981 hits Extra: Aretha Franklin - Respect - classic! one of my favourites from her 13. Stevie Wonder - Do I Do (16) - good song, I prefer this over the Ja Rule song that sampled this 12. Fleetwood Mac - Hold Me (22) - good song! Definitely one of my favourites from them 11. The Motels - Only The Lonely (13) - I like this one, not sure whether I prefer this or "Suddenly Last Summer" though 10. 38 Special - Caught Up In You (10) - great song! Probably my favourite from them 9. Soft Cell - Tainted Love (11) - great song! I also like Rihanna's sampling of this (wow, THREE songs in this chart were sampled into other top 10 hits!) 8. Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder - Ebony and Ivory (3) - good song but both have had better... still, the story about Paul's chickens in the taxi is classic! 7. Juice Newton - Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me (8) - The song's pretty good, one of her best... hopefully they do 1981 soon so we can hear "Queen of Hearts" 6. The Dazz Band - Let It Whip (7) - funky song, it's alright... surprised this never hit R&R at all 5. Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger (9) - great song! An 80's mix show essential 4. Asia - Heat Of The Moment (4) - good song! Probably my favourite from them 3. John Mellencamp - Hurts So Good (5) - great song! Another 80's mix show essential (and it'll probably be top 10 AGAIN next time they do 1982 since it really had legs) 2. Toto - Rosanna (2) - great song! I do prefer some others from them though 1. Human League - Don't You Want Me (1) - great song! An 80's mix show essential, and still one of my favourites from them

Thank God,It's Friday",which was an obvious "Saturday Night Fever" knock off The movie release dates are approximately 5 months apart. So they would have had to first identify that SNF was a hit and then be able to write and complete an entire movie + 2 LP soundstrack in a matter of a couple of months. So I am not seeing a knock-off possibility. Disco clubs were hot and it seems reasonable that two movies would be made at about the same time to exploit that era.

July 15, 1978I figured since I was listening to the 70's show now, I'd do the same kind of commentary I usually do weekly for the 80's shows! Falling off: Seals & Crofts - You're The Love (40) - wtf did this sound like again? Tuxedo Junction - Chattanooga Choo Choo (32) - wtf did this sound like again? Patti Smith Group - Because The Night (19) - good song but I prefer the 10,000 Maniacs remake 40. Paul McCartney & Wings - I've Had Enough (debut) - wtf did this sound like again? I think I liked it though 39. Dave Mason - Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (39) - kinda weird for a remake but I prefer the original 38. Kenny Rogers - Love Or Something Like It (debut) - definitely decent, much better than his 1981 hits 37. Billy Joel - Only The Good Die Young (24) - great song! The best on the chart so far 36. Todd Rundgren - Can We Still Be Friends (37) - I like this but prefer some others by him 35. Bruce Springsteen - Prove It All Night (debut) - I like this but prefer "Born To Run" and his 80's hits 34. Sweet - Love Is Like Oxygen (15) - I prefer their earlier hits but this is good too 33. John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John - You're The One That I Want (14) - great song! One of the best songs from musicals ever 32. Jackson Browne - Stay (38) - I like this, better than the original 31. Bob Welch - Hot Love, Cold World (33) - not bad at all, decent but kinda forgettable 30. Steve Martin - King Tut (35) - fun novelty song, I like this 29. Barbra Streisand - Songbird (34) - No. Just no. 28. Atlanta Rhythm Section - I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight (36) - I liked this more than I thought I would! 27. Carly Simon - You Belong To Me (10) - great song, definitely one of her best Extra: Andy Gibb - An Everlasting Love - great song! I've got into him more lately, and this is one of his best 26. Walter Egan - Magnet and Steel (31) - it's ok but nothing remarkable 25. Roberta Flack - If I Ever See You Again (27) - No. Just no. 24. Love & Kisses - Thank God It's Friday (25) - pretty decent, but very typical disco song 23. Steely Dan - FM (No Static At All) (28) - I like most of their other hits more but this is alright too 22. Toby Beau - My Angel Baby (29) - this song's pretty good, surprised they're a group as the name sounds like a solo artist! 21. Commodores - Three Times A Lady (26) - as cheesy as it is, I really like this, one of their best songs 20. Foreigner - Hot Blooded (30) - great song! Definitely one of the best songs on the chart, and one of Foreigner's best ever 19. Joe Walsh - Life's Been Good (23) - great song! His best solo song though I prefer him in the Eagles 18. Eruption - I Can't Stand The Rain (18) - pretty catchy song, another fine example of disco 17. Barry Manilow - Copacabana (22) - great song! Probably my favourite from him 16. Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight (17) - a nice, sweet ballad... definitely one of my favourites from him 15. Jefferson Starship - Runaway (20) - I usually like their stuff, and this is no exception though I prefer them with Mickey Thomas 14. Pablo Cruise - Love Will Find A Way (21) - this was good but I prefer "Whatcha Gonna Do" Extra: Evelyn "Champagne" King - Shame - another good disco song 13. Meat Loaf - Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad (11) - great song! My favourite 70's song from him though I prefer "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" 12. Michael Johnson - Bluer Than Blue (12) - it's ok but nothing really special 11. Frankie Valli - Grease (16) - another great Grease song though I prefer the John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John duets 10. Donna Summer - Last Dance (13) - great song! I prefer some later stuff from her though 9. Bonnie Tyler - It's A Heartache (6) - I like this a lot but prefer "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" 8. Peter Brown - Dance With Me (8) - another typical disco song, pretty decent stuff 7. Heatwave - The Groove Line (9) - another typical disco song, also catchy, kinda reminds me of KC and the Sunshine Band 6. Rolling Stones - Miss You (7) - great song! One of my favourites from them (Chris will certainly disagree here!) 5. Bob Seger - Still The Same (5) - I like this one, as I do with a lot of his stuff 4. O'Jays - Used Ta Be My Girl (4) - it's not bad but I prefer some of their earlier hits like "Love Train" 3. ABBA - Take A Chance On Me (3) - great song! One of the best songs they ever did Extra: Olivia Newton-John - Hopelessly Devoted To You - a nice song but I prefer the "Grease" songs on the chart 2. Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street (2) - the saxophone in here is very hypnotic... definitely enhances an already great song 1. Andy Gibb - Shadow Dancing (1) - great song! My favourite from him And to make it just like my 80's commentaries, I'll include the same features I include there! Chicago update: "Take Me Back To Chicago" had been off the Hot 100 for a month or so, and still a few months before their return to the top 40 with "Alive Again", their first single following the death of Terry Kath, from a rare album not titled in their usual way, "Hot Streets". Prediction for next week: I enjoyed the 7/19/1975 show so I wouldn't mind them doing that one next week. Oh, and I enjoyed reading the commentary for the Shadoe show posted a while back too. I wouldn't mind seeing more Shadoe, CT40 or 1998-2003 AT40 commentaries posted here alongside the classic shows.

July 10, 1982I was kinda hoping they'd do the previous week so I could say goodbye to the three worst songs of 1982 all in one week (and no, I don't mean Tommy Tutone or Rick Springfield; despite the big gap between shows, we heard both debuting on the last 1982 show!) SXM did run the previous week at different times during the last two weeks; droppers in addition to the good ones mentioned included Charlene's "I've Never Been To Me" (which I've NJN'd before) and Deniece Williams' "It's Gonna Take a Miracle" and Roberta Flack's "Making Love" (not as bad IMO, but meh at best.) Of the "wtf did this sound like" songs, "After the Glitter Fades" is a country-flavored ballad", "Be Mine Tonight" is an decent upbeat Diamond effort, and "Angel In Blue" is a midtempo ballad where the J. Geils Band sounds a lot like Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, with special local resonance for WQSR as it's set near the Chesapeake Bay.

Well, freakyflybry, you got your wish! Here's my critique of a show that aired about 8 years ago! 7/14/01 40. HIT ‘EM UP STYLE (OOPS) - BLU CANTRELL- (A very solid song! I loved it when it came out! Too bad she only had one other hit.) 39. PERFECT GENTLEMAN- WYCLEF JEAN FEAT HOPE- (Not really enjoyable. Just barely escapes the "No. Just no".) 38. FILL ME IN- CRAIG DAVID- (Great song! My other fave is "What's Your Flava?") 37. PLAYAS GON PLAY- 3LW- (Good, but their first hit was much better.) 36. BAD DAY- FUEL- (Love this song!!) 35. LOVERBOY- MARIAH CAREY FEAT CAMEO- (As we all know, 2001 was the year Mariah hit a low point, and this kinda proves it.) 34. BE LIKE THAT- 3 DOORS DOWN- (Great song! I loved 3DD's early stuff.) 33. EVERY OTHER TIME- LFO- (Ahhh, another boy band that was forgotten as the years passed. Pretty good song, though.) 32. FREAKY GIRL- SHAGGY- (Definitely not as great as his other singles.) 31. MISS CALIFORNIA- DANTE THOMAS FEAT PRAS- (I also kinda liked this song when it came out. Now, not as much.) 30. PEACHES AND CREAM- 112- (Pretty dirty sounding, if you know what I mean.) 29. I’M A BELIEVER- SMASH MOUTH- (Excellent cover from an excellent movie, "Shrek"!) 28. I WANNA BE BAD- WILLA FORD- (Good song!) 27. THERE YOU’LL BE- FAITH HILL- (A very poignant song, but it practically fizzled on these charts.) 26. FLY AWAY FROM HERE- AEROSMITH- (I much rather "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" over this ballad.) LDD: EYE OF THE TIGER- SURVIVOR- (Good song, though it was from 1982. Not an often song heard in a LDD). 25. THE SPACE BETWEEN- DAVE MATTHEWS BAND- (Great song! This band's one of my favorites!) 24. IN MY POCKET- MANDY MOORE- (Pretty song. I'm jealous of her being in a movie with my celeb crush John Krasinski.) 23. TAKE IT TO THE HOUSE- TRICK DADDY- (That song was pretty annoying to me.) 22. GET YOUR FREAK ON- MISSY ELLIOT- (Loved this song! Besides, I love most of her big hits.) 21. FLAVOR OF THE WEAK- AMERICAN HI-FI- (Meh.) 20. IT’S BEEN AWHILE- STAIND- (Boring song.) 19. PLAY- JENNIFER LOPEZ- (Great song! Definitely the peak of J. Lo's career.) 18. HERE’S TO THE NIGHT- EVE 6- (Good song. I can't even count how many schools this song as a graduation song.) 17. MORE THAN THAT- BACKSTREET BOYS- (Okay, but not their best.) 16. LET ME BLOW YOUR MIND- EVE FEAT GWEN STEFANI- (Great song! As we would know, Gwen Stefani would dabble a bit more into hip-hop sound on her solo albums 15. WHEN IT’S OVER- SUGAR RAY- (Great song. I wonder whatever happened to them! lol) 14. ALL FOR YOU- JANET- (Proved that Janet still had it since 1986!) 13. SOMEONE TO CALL MY LOVER- JANET- (Another great song of hers! Nice use of old America song.) LDD: FROM THIS MOMENT ON- SHANIA TWAIN- (An oft-overplayed song on AC radio, and even on a few LDDs. Not my taste.) 12. DRIVE- INCUBUS- (Good song! My favorite from them!) 11. I’M LIKE A BIRD- NELLY FURTADO- (Nelly Furtado, back when her music was interesting. Too bad her more recent songs were not quite as good as this one.) 10. BOOTYLICIOUS- DESTINY’S CHILD- (Awesome song! I remember Stevie Nicks was in this vid!) 9. WHAT WOULD YOU DO- CITY HIGH- (A very serious song that I didn't really get until a couple of years ago.) 8. FOLLOW ME- UNCLE KRACKER- (I couldn't go anywhere without hearing this song! It got annoying, but I'm content with it now.) 7. POP- NSYNC- (I was singing this song with my cousin a few weeks back and forgot how great this song was!) 6. ALL OR NOTHING- O-TOWN- (More boy bands! Unfortunately, I don't like this song at all.) LDD: HERO- MARIAH CAREY- (Can someone tell me how many times this song was used as a LDD?) 5. DROPS OF JUPITER- TRAIN- (Great tune! A solid song all around!) 4. IRRESISTABLE- JESSICA SIMPSON- (Not her best.) 3. RIDE WITH ME- NELLY FEAT CITY SPUD- (Back when rap wasn't, well, you know what I'm saying.) 2. HANGING BY A MOMENT- LIFEHOUSE- (Wow, this song had some longevity! Though I like this song, I rather their later stuff.) 1. LADY MARMALADE- CHRISTINA AGULIERA, LIL KIM, MYA, AND PINK- (This song got redundant back in 2001 after I heard it so many times, but now I really love it, and I'm glad it hit number 1 and stayed there for such a long time!)

"LDD: EYE OF THE TIGER- SURVIVOR- (Good song, though it was from 1982. Not an often song heard in a LDD)."
My favorite show ever -- 4/23/83 -- features Eye of the Tiger as a LDD.

We'll go back 15 years in time to recall AT40's last show to be broadcast on American airwaves before the 1998 revival.
07/09/1994
Falling off:
DREAMS – THE CRANBERRIES - From the days when this band still made interesting music. LOSER - BECK - A classic is a classic, period. I WISH - GABRIELLE - Inoffensive British pop-soul. Her last American hit. CANTALOOP (FLIP FANTASIA) – US3 - The signs of Alternative Nation: a British jazz-rap tune. And a great one at that! OBJECTS IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR MAY APPEAR CLOSER THAN THEY ARE – MEAT LOAF - As overblown as its title.
40: THE WAT SHE LOVES ME – RICHARD MARX - Inviting Lionel Richie and Luther Vandross for background vocals does not a soul song make. 39: WHEN CAN I SEE YOU - BABYFACE - Inoffensive acoustic-driven R&B ballad. 38: I’LL BE LOVING YOU - COLLAGE - What year was this, exactly? 1994, right? Well, someone must not have told him, for he was doing freestyle as if 1984 had been perpetuated! 37: ROUND HERE – COUNTING CROWS - An almost chorus-less melodically engaging song, with emotionally gripping lyrics, even if Adm Duritz's delivery was this close to overblown. 36: REGULATE – NATE DOGG & WARREN G. - In a great year for rap music, this was one of the few which charted, proving how far from reality Top 40 radio was - thus explaining some of its woes at the time. This one was no exception. Murdah! 35: I NEED YOUR LOVE - BOSTON - Once again, what year was this, exactly? Here was Boston delivering a melodic hard rock song as if it was 1987 all over again. The reality, of course, was far less rosy. 34: REGULAR THANG - OVIS - Who needed this when Beck was doing this genre-straddling thing with aplomb? 33: WHATTA MAN – SALT-N-PEPA FEATURING EN VOGUE - There's a reason why "Regulate" is still spun, and this is not! 32: HARD LUCK WOMAN – GARTH BROOKS - Um... lol? 31: BACKWATER – MEAT PUPPETS - Kurt Cobain's endorsement (and alt.rock's dominance) took them out of obscurity. And while good, there's a reason why their previous material is still better regarded these days. 30: BEAUTIFUL IN MY EYES – JOSHUA KADISON - Better than Xanax, I tell ya! 29: I’M READY – TEVIN CAMPBELL - Had he more material like this, and he would probably still be giving a lot of the current R&B singers a run for their money. 28: FALL DOWN – TOAD THE WET SPROCKET - Good song, even if TTWS would never be more than R.E.M.-lite. 27: SLEEPING IN MY CAR - ROXETTE - Oh dear... LDD: RUSH RUSH – PAULA ABDUL - As a love-tinged LDD, there are far worse than this. 26: AIN’T GOT NOTHING IF YOU AIN’T GOT LOVE – MICHAEL BOLTON - Even when he "rocked", he sounded and acted lame! 25: COME TO MY WINDOW – MELISSA ETHERIDGE - Workmanlike (no pun intended) heartland rock. It's good for what it is. 24: I’LL TAKE YOU THERE – GENERAL PUBLIC - And what was once 2/5 of the English Beat had a last sniff of a hit with a cover which is now amusing for adding ragga toasting to the Staples Singers original. 23: MISLED – CELINE DION - Even when she upped the tempo, she sounded and acted lame! 22: MOVING ON UP – M PEOPLE - Disco-house nugget! 21: PRAYER FOR THE DYING – SEAL - Back when Seal still made decent music. Great pop-soul song, with interesting lyrics. 20: THE SIGN – ACE OF BASE - Say what you will: this one was one hell of a Euro-pop record! SNEEK PEEK: AFTERNOONS AND COFFEESthingyS – CRASH TEST DUMMIES - Decent folk-pop-tinged song that ended up not charting. 19: BACK AND FORTH - AALIYAH - Baby girl Aaliyah already making damage! What a nugget! 18: ALWAYS - ERASURE - One last sniff of undeniable pop craft from these two. 17: UNTIL I FALL AWAY – GIN BLOSSOMS - This one was a hit more on the back of "Hey Jealousy" and "Found Out About You" than anything else. 16: CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT – ELTON JOHN - How can you badmouth a Disney staple? 15: WILD NIGHT – JOHN MELLENCAMP WITH ME/SHELL NDEGEOCELLO - Carbon copy covers are what the word "useless" was invented for. This was no exception. 14: RETURN TO INNOCENCE - ENIGMA - This new-age crock could have only been a hit in the confusing days of 1994! 13: CRAZY - AEROSMITH - Generic power-ballad. 12: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD - PRINCE - In other hands, this would have been maudlin. In Prince's hands, it shone bright. 11: SHINE – COLLECTIVE SOUL - Their only decent song ever. 10: MR. JONES – COUNTING CROWS - Sure this was overplayed. But it still resonates after all these years. 9: BABY I LOVE YOUR WAY – BIG MOUNTAIN - The even liter UB40. Enough said. 8: IF YOU GO – JON SECADA - Excuse me while I barf! FLASHBACK: TOP FIVE SONGS THIS WEEK SIX YEARS AGO 7: ANY TIME, ANY PLACE – JANET JACKSON - Eerie, sensual, intriguing. Janet really was on top form back then. 6: ANYTIME YOU NEED A FRIEND – MARIAH CAREY - The less said, the better. 5: YOU MEAN THE WORLD TP ME – TONI BRAXTON - Weak-ass AC-friendly ballad. 4: I’LL REMEMBER - MADONNA - This close to descend into AC mawkishness. Fortunately, it handles itself pretty nicely. 3: STAY – LISA LOEB AND NINA STORIES - A milestone, as it became the first song by an unsigned act to hit #1 (on the Hot 100 too, for the record). Good thing it was with this great Joni Mitchell-tinged bittersweet song. 2: I SWEAR – ALL4LONE - I swear I'm still in shock as to how this absolute tripe was #1! 1: DON’T TURN AROUND – ACE OF BASE - That this merely serviceable ditty got to #1 is proof of how hot they were at the time.

And here's the first show of the resurrected AT40 (March 28, 1998):
40: SOUTHHAMPTON - JAMES HORNER (instrumental that charted on the back of Titanic-mania) 39: OPEN UP YOUR EYES - TONIC (very good) 38: PINK - AEROSMITH (fun song, one of their bluesier pop hits.) 37: YOU'RE STILL THE ONE - SHANIA TWAIN (nice, but I like most of the other songs on the album [Come On Over] better.) 36: I DO - LISA LOEB (excellent) 35: LOVE YOU DOWN - INOJ (not bad, but Ready for the World did it better.) 34: EVERYBODY - BACKSTREET BOYS (dumb, but still fun) 33: TOO MUCH - SPICE GIRLS (ballads weren’t their strong suit.) 32: A PROMISE I MAKE - DAKOTA MOON (R&B ballad; nothing special) 31: TIME OF YOUR LIFE - GREEN DAY (fine ballad from punk rockers that was considered unusual then, but they’ve produced several great slow songs since.) 30: NICE AND SLOW - USHER (steamy midtempo tune) LDD: I LOVE YOU ALWAYS FOREVER - DONNA LEWIS (this was #1 for 12 weeks in 1996; it’s pleasant and atmospheric, but I don’t get why it was such a huge hit.) 29: ME - PAULA COLE (OK, but I like the “Dawson’s Creek” hit that preceded it better, actually.) 28: I DON'T EVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN - UNCLE SAM (meh) 27: I'LL BE - EDWIN McCAIN (nice at first, but hung around for a long time and wore thin.) 26: TUBTHUMPING - CHUMBAWAMBA (great barroom-type shout along) 25: AMNESIA - CHUMBAWAMBA (much less effective follow up) 24: IT'S UP TO YOU - THE TUESDAYS (very good song that has essentially gotten lost.) 23: BITTER SWEET SYMPHONY - VERVE (great singing and string interpolation of the Stones’ “The Last Time”, though that did chew up the royalties.) 22: MY FATHER'S EYES - ERIC CLAPTON (one of his best later-period hits) 21: SEX AND CANDY - MARCY PLAYGROUND (one of my favorites from this period; unfortunately this was their only hit.) 20: ARE YOU JIMMY RAY - JIMMY RAY (No. Just no-except maybe as a novelty.) LDD: HUMAN TOUCH - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN (good title song from an underrated album; it’s not the E Street band but still decent) 19: DO YOU REALLY WANT ME - ROBYN (pretty annoying song from a talented singer) 18: SHOW ME LOVE - ROBYN (much better than the song that preceded it) 17: TURN BACK TIME - AQUA (OK tune that might have done better for them, careerwise, as a first single instead of the gimmicky “Barbie Girl” which stamped them as a novelty act.) 16: BRICK - BEN FOLDS FIVE (well written ballad that is serious to the point of dour) 15: YOU MAKE ME WANNA - USHER (first big hit for him established his smooth but edged style) 14: THE MUMMERS DANCE - LOREENA McKENNITT (interesting mix of Celtic myth and atmosphere with a danceable beat.) 13: GETTING JIGGY WIT IT - WILL SMITH (lightweight but enjoyable solo hit from the Fresh Prince) 12: WALKIN ON THE SUN - SMASH MOUTH (fun first hit, setting their 60s garage rock-ish style) 11: HOW'S IT GOING TO BE - THIRD EYE BLIND (their uptempo hits are better, but this is still good) 10: I WANT YOU BACK - N' SYNC (good chart debut) 9: TORN - NATALIE IMBRUGLIA (still sounds good despite the overplay, to the tune of 11 weeks at #1) 8: ALL MY LIFE - K-CI & JO JO (well sung, but very sappy.) 7: TOGETHER AGAIN - JANET JACKSON (light but effervescent hit) 6: AS LONG AS YOU LOVE ME - BACKSTREET BOYS (decent midtempo song that was their second hit, before overexposure sent many of their songs to NJN status for me.) LDD: I BELIEVE I CAN FLY - R. KELLY (probably overused as a dedication/inspirational number, but a successful change from his typical risqué fare) 5: KISS THE RAIN - BILLIE MYERS (one of the best on this countdown) 4: FROZEN - MADONNA (interesting and successful techno experiment) 3: 3AM - MATCHBOX 20 (OK but I like most of their other hits better) 2: TRULY, MADLY, DEEPLY - SAVAGE GARDEN (very nice midtempo ballad that ended up getting overplayed. Still, it wasn’t as overplayed as the final song here…) 1: MY HEART WILL GO ON - CELINE DION (what more needs to be said? Strongly sung but almost grossly overexposed, as were all things “Titanic” at the time.)

Going back to the beginning of the end... 11/30/9140: HOUSECALL (YOUR BODY CAN'T LIE TO ME) – SHABBA RANKS FEATURING MAXI PRIEST - Probably the first bonafide ragga/dancehall record to hit the Top 40. Still sounds good. 39: A DAY IN MY LIFE (WITHOUT YOU) – LISETTE MELENDEZ - Serviceable freestyle, but not much more. 38: I LOVE YOUR SMILE – SHANICE - Cheesy, indeed. But also cute. 37: CHANGE - LISA STANSFIELD - Very underrated pop-soul gem. 36: LOVE ME ALL UP – STACY EARL - Forgettable. 35: WILDSIDE - MARKY MARK AND THE FUNKY BUNCH - Even when he tackled social issues, he still sounded sounded cookie-cutter. But where "Good Vibrations" qualifies as guilty pleasure, this is just plain. Plus, this had already showed how to properly sample "Walk On The Wildside". 34: BROKEN ARROW - ROD STEWART - Generic ballad. 33: TOO BLIND TO SEE IT – KYM SIMS - Underrated pop-house ditty. 32: WIND OF CHANGE- SCORPIONS - Bless their optimism; we all know things did change - but not exactly for the better! Plus, it wasn't exactly what I'd call a great ballad in the first place. 31: I ADORE MI AMOR - COLOR ME BADD - Cookie-cutter guilty pleasure. 30: SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT – BONNIE RAITT - Serviceable heartland rock. 29: I WONDER WHY – CURTIS STIGERS - I wonder why you're a one-hit wonder, Curtis... 28: THE ONE AND ONLY - CHESNEY HAWKES - Indeed, his "one and only" hit. Good for trips down memory lane, but nothing more. 27: DON’T WANT TO BE A FOOL - LUTHER VANDROSS - In other hands, this would easily sag into sentimental tripe. In Luther's hands, it sounds like a genuine lament. 26: O.P.P. - NAUGHTY BY NATURE - It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know what O.P.P. stands for. It also doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize why this is one of hip-hop's classic jams. 25: RUNNING BACK TO YOU - VANESSA WILLIAMS - An unremarkable freestyle-tinged jam, just before The Song. 24: LIVE FOR LOVING YOU - GLORIA ESTAFAN - Forgettable dance ditty. 23: SET THE NIGHT TO MUSIC - ROBERTA FLACK WITH MAXI PRIEST - Not exactly on par with Roberta Flack's best. And what's sadder is that this will be remembered as the woman's last Top 40 hit. 22: GOOD VIBRATIONS – MARKY MARK & THE FUNKY BUNCH FEATURING LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY - See "Wildside". AT40 SNEAK PEAK: THE WAY I FEEL ABOUT YOU - KARYN WHITE - Her last Top 40 hit. It was alright. 21: LET'S TALK ABOUT SEX - SALT-N-PEPA - THIS is the way sex should be discussed: openly, with no pseudo-morals getting in the way. Plus, it was a bouncy little tune. 20: CAN'T STOP THIS THING WE STARTED - BRYAN ADAMS - Riding on the back of That Song, it wasn't exactly one of his most memorable rockers. 19: NO SON OF MINE - GENESIS - As the alt.rock revolution was on its way, choosing such a dark song as the lead single of We Can't Dance ended up being a stroke of genius. By far, one of their best from their mainstream pop phase. 18: LOVE OF A LIFETIME – FIREHOUSE - For nostalgic trips, this has its charm. As a song by itself, it showed why the era of power ballads was soon to subside. 17: FINALLY - CE CE thingyTON - It's not for nought that this is considered a modern dance music classic and is still being played in nightclubs as we speak. 16: WITH YOU - TONY TERRY - His only Top 40 hit was a merely adequate ballad. 15: STREET OF DREAMS - NIA PEEPLES - Generic new jack swing ditty. 14: HOLE HEARTED – EXTREME - An underrated acoustically-led gem from an overtly underrated and as-eclectic-as-they-come rock band. 13: KEEP COMING BACK - RICHARD MARX - His only song with true substance and depth. 12: THAT'S WHAT LOVE IS FOR - AMY GRANT - Bless her good feelings. But good feelings alone do not a good song make. 11: CAN'T LET GO - MARIAH CAREY - Mariah might dismiss this era as cookie-cutter. And while I agree with her in some ways, songs like this beg to differ. In other hands, this song would have fell flat in other hands. 10: DO ANYTHING - NATURAL SELECTION - Underrated doesn't even come close to describe this funky little ditty. 9: EMOTIONS - MARIAH CAREY - Just the fact that it sampled Cheryl Lynn's "Got To Be Real" made it good. And then came Mariah's voice, at the top of her game, making this soar! 8: ROMANTIC - KARYN WHITE - A deserved #1 hit for Karyn. Her best song, by far. 7: CREAM - PRINCE & THE NEW POWER GENERATION - Another deserved #1 hit. As slinky and sensual as only Prince can be at his best. AT40 FLASHBACK: TOP 5 SONGS A YEAR AGO TODAY 6: IT'S SO HARD TO SAY GOODBYE TO YESTERDAY - BOYZ II MEN - Back when their ballads didn't have the smell of formula attached to them. 5: BLOWING KISSES IN THE WIND - PAULA ABDUL - Paula Abdul taking chances on this love-hurting ballad. And succeeding at it. LDD: IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME – CHER - Some people would say that turning back time is your greatest specialty, Cher! Nevertheless, it was probably the best song of her AOR period. 4: ALL 4 LOVE - COLOR ME BADD - A retro-tinged ditty which showed why their debut album sold upwards of 3 million copies. 3: SET ADRIFT ON MEMORY BLISS - P.M. DAWN - Or how to properly sample Spandau Ballet's "True" and make a pop-rap classic in the process. 2: BLACK OR WHITE - MICHAEL JACKSON - For any other act, this song would have probably been the pinnacle of their career. For Michael, it was just merely good. 1: WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN - MICHAEL BOLTON - Bless you, Michael. No one can say you haven't tried really, really hard to measure up to the soul classics you worship. It's just that it was worthless. No matter what, you will never be regarded as a, um, soul provider, but rather as the crooner of overwrought sentimentality tailor-made for the comfort food of AC radio. Alas.

"The One & Only" was played over the opening credits of the Michael J.Fox movie,"Doc Hollywood",which was on TV Land the other night-Chesney Hawkes' father Chip was a hitmaker too-In 1967,his band The Tremeloes had two top 40 hits:"Here Comes My Baby",which was written by Cat Stevens & "Silence Is Golden",which was an old Four Seasons song that appeared on the B-side of "Rag Doll",their #1 smash from the summer of 1964.

July 9, 1988
This is a former Flashback show, but this is its first run on AT40: The 80s. This could very well be the last 1988 show until early 2010, unless they decide to run the ever-popular August 6 show. Anyway, here’s my commentary for this week’s show:
Droppers: HEART OF MINE – BOZ SCAGGS - Great song, definitely one of my favorites by him. Shame that it fell off before we got to hear it this year (at least we did hear it on a June, 1988 show last year) NAUGHTY GIRLS (NEED LOVE TOO) – SAMANTHA FOX (37) - Meh, not a big fan of it. I liked most of her other singles better. SUPERSONIC – JJ FAD (32) - This was a fun rap song. Like the Boz Scaggs song, we did get to hear it on last year’s summer, 1988 show. EVERYTHING YOUR HEART DESIRES – DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES - This super duo, who were big in the early half of the 1980s had one last gasp with this song, then they were done hitting the Top 10. They did make a brief comeback in late 1990, just narrowly missing the Top Ten with a song appropriately titled “So Close”. That was their last Top 40 hit. Oh, my opinion on this song? It was a good one, but not their best.
40: LOVE WILL SAVE THE DAY – WHITNEY HOUSTON (debut) - This song was OK, but not her best. I can see how this song ended her streak of number one songs. 39: TOMORROW PEOPLE – ZIGGY MARLEY & THE MELODY MAKERS (debut) - Well, this is Ziggy’s only Top 40 hit, but his dad, the late, great Bob Marley, surprisingly, never hit the Top 40. Anyway, I really liked this song, which says a lot, considering I’m not a big fan of reggae music. A funny thing about this song - the first time I heard it, it was on a very statical radio station. I could have sworn he was singing, “Don’t want no femur wearing your pants”. 38: RAG DOLL - AEROSMITH (debut) - This one’s OK, but I prefer many others by them - generally, their ballads. 37: CIRCLE IN THE SAND – BELINDA CARLISLE (23) - Nice, pleasant sounding song, but far from being my favorite song by her or the Go-Gos. 36: THE TWIST – THE FAT BOYS (debut) - Meh, they prolly should’ve left this song alone. Not quite “No. Just no”, but d**n close. 35: TROUBLE – NIA PEEPLES (39) - This song’s pretty good - your typical late-80s dance song. 34: LOVE CHANGES (EVERYTHING) – CLIMIE FISHER (38) - Good song - sounds a little like something Rod Stewart would sing. 33: I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY – KYLIE MINOGUE (35) - Great song, definitely underrated. I like this song a LOT better than the frankly annoying “Loco-Motion” (and of course, that one was her biggest 80s hit. Oh well, at least we never hear it on this series...) 32: ONE MORE TRY – GEORGE MICHAEL (16) - Great song! One of my favorite songs by him! 31: I DON’T WANNA LIVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE – CHICAGO (34) - Great song, but I prefer “Look Away”, another song on which Bill Champlin sang lead. In fact, I believe he handled the lead vocals on all three Top 40 hits from the Chicago 19 album. EXTRA: ST. ELMO’S FIRE (MAN IN MOTION) – JOHN PARR - Good song, even if overplayed. I liked the story about Rick Hansen, the paraplegic athlete that inspired this song. OPTIONAL EXTRA: FAST CAR – TRACY CHAPMAN - Good song. This song was debuting on countdowns using the R&R chart this week, and would enter the AT40 chart the following week. 30: ALPHABET ST. - PRINCE (12) - Good song, but he’s had many better. 29: THE COLOUR OF LOVE – BILLY OCEAN (30) - Great song, one of my favorite songs by him (I like most of his slow songs). 28: DO YOU LOVE ME – THE CONTOURS (33) - Good song. This song was edited in the remaster, because I distinctly remember that a newer version of the song was played on the original show. 27: I DON’T WANNA GO ON WITH YOU LIKE THAT – ELTON JOHN (36) - Pretty good song, but I prefer many others by him. 26: TALL COOL ONE – ROBERT PLANT (25) - Good song. I especially like the Zeppelin montage at the end. 25: JUST GOT PAID – JOHNNY KEMP (31) - Meh, nothing special. 24: 1-2-3 – GLORIA ESTEFAN & MIAMI SOUND MACHINE (28) - Good song, but I generally prefer their slower songs. 23: BEDS ARE BURNING – MIDNIGHT OIL (17) - Good song, but I sure got sick of hearing it every hour on Chicago’s 80s station (back in the early part of the decade, that is). 22: PARADISE - SADE (24) - Great song, one of my favorites by them. 21: PARENTS JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND – D.J. JAZZY JEFF & THE FRESH PRINCE (26) - Good song. I sure remember being able to relate to the guy, because I was sixteen at the time as well. 20: KISS ME DEADLY – LITA FORD (14) - Good song! OPTIONAL EXTRA – SWEET CHILD O’ MINE - GUNS ‘N ROSES - Good song, possibly my favorite song by them. 19: TOGETHER FOREVER – RICK ASTLEY (10) - Ah, “Never Gonna Give You Up Part 2". Good song, but I liked his follow-up a lot better. 18: I STILL BELIEVE – BRENDA K. STARR (13) - Great song! It should have hit the Top Ten IMO, but at least it made the Top 100 of 1988 - the only non-Top Ten to do so that year. 17: SIGN YOUR NAME – TERENCE TRENT D’ARBY (27) - Great song - my favorite song by him. It was the biggest mover of the week. 16: MAKE ME LOSE CONTROL – ERIC CARMEN (22) - Another great song! A big raspberry to KQLL, as they ran their commercial break too long and as a result, this song started during the first chorus. 15: RUSH HOUR – JANE WEIDLIN (19) - Good song. Too bad her next hit “Inside A Dream” flopped. It was off to a promising start, but then hit a brick wall when it was in the 50s. 14: HANDS TO HEAVEN - BREATHE (20) - This song was OK, but quite overplayed. I prefer their two 1990 hits. 13: LOST IN YOU – ROD STEWART (18) - Good song, and one we don’t hear anymore. LDD: OPEN ARMS - JOURNEY - Good song, though somewhat overplayed. 12: ROLL WITH IT – STEVE WINWOOD - Great song, one of my favorites by him. The funny thing is, when the song was climbing the charts, I hated it with a passion. I guess it’s like wine - gets better with age. 11: MAKE IT REAL – THE JETS (4) - Great song, one of my favorites by them (ranks right up there with songs like “You Got It All” and “The Same Love”) OPTIONAL EXTRA: SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE – ROBERT PALMER - This was OK, but one of my least favorite songs by him (partially owing to overplay, although I never was crazy about the song in the first place). 10: NITE AND DAY – AL B. SURE! (11) - Good song - has sort of a hypnotic effect. 9: THE VALLEY ROAD – BRUCE HORNSBY & THE RANGE (5) - Good song, but definitely not my favorite song from him/them. 8: HOLD ON TO THE NIGHTS – RICHARD MARX (15) - A rare example of the last song from an album being the biggest, as this song was the only song from Richard’s self-titled album that hit #1. It was a good one, but I preferred his songs from “Repeat Offender” (well, except for “Right Here Waiting”). 7: FOOLISH BEAT – DEBBIE GIBSON (2) - Great song, definitely one of my favorites from her, right up there with “Lost In Your Eyes” and “We Could Be Together”. However, I strongly disliked the edit of this song. Right as Debbie was about to go into the bridge, they cut right to near the end of the song, where she sings “do do do do doo”. Totally screws up the continuity of the song. Had they cut out where she says “Oh” after the second chorus, it might have been a little less obvious, but what can you do? 6: NOTHIN’ BUT A GOOD TIME - POISON (8) - Great song, one of my favorites from them. 5: DIRTY DIANA – MICHAEL JACKSON (1) - I liked this song, one of several rock songs from him (although, unlike “Beat it” and “Black Or White”, I don’t think the guitar was played by a famous rock musician). 4: NEW SENSATION - INXS (9) - Good song, though I’m not a big fan of them in general. 3: POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME – DEF LEPPARD (7) - Even though this is indeed a good song, they’ve had several better songs. OPTIONAL EXTRA: MONKEY – GEORGE MICHAEL - Good song, but I preferred most other songs by him, such as the one that was on this week’s chart. This song was not played by KQLL (the last optional extra never is, on that station) 2: MERCEDES BOY - PEBBLES (6) - Great song. Kind of surprised that it didn’t quite make it to #1, given its big jump to the runner-up position (Casey even said that it looked like the song was going to hit #1). 1: THE FLAME – CHEAP TRICK (3) - Good song, but quite overplayed. I prefer many of their other hits.

9: EMOTIONS - MARIAH CAREY - Just the fact that it sampled Cheryl Lynn's "Got To Be Real" made it good. And then came Mariah's voice, at the top of her game, making this soar! I thought that it was "Best Of My Love" that this song sampled. "I'll Do 4 U" by Father MC, from earlier that year, was the song that sampled "Got To Be Real".
